Variability of cork from Portuguese Quercus suber studied by solid-state (13)C-NMR and FTIR spectroscopies.

A new approach is presented for the study of the variability of Portuguese reproduction cork using solid-state (13)C-NMR spectroscopy and photoacoustic (PAS) FTIR (FTIR-PAS) spectroscopy combined with chemometrics. Cork samples were collected from 12 different geographical sites, and their (13)C-cross-polarization with magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) and FTIR spectra were registered. A large spectral variability among the cork samples was detected by principal component analysis and found to relate to the suberin and carbohydrate contents. This variability was independent of the sample geographical origin but significantly dependent on the cork quality, thus enabling the distinction of cork samples according to the latter property. The suberin content of the cork samples was predicted using multivariate regression models based on the (13)C-NMR and FTIR spectra of the samples as reported previously. Finally, the relationship between the variability of the (13)C-CP/MAS spectra with that of the FTIR-PAS spectra was studied by outer product analysis. This type of multivariate analysis enabled a clear correlation to be established between the peaks assigned to suberin and carbohydrate in the FTIR spectrum and those appearing in the (13)C-CP/MAS spectra.

Quantitation of aliphatic suberin in Quercus suber L. cork by FTIR spectroscopy and solid-state (13)C-NMR spectroscopy.

This work determined that the percentage of suberin in cork may be found by solid-state (13)C cross polarization/magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) NMR spectroscopy and by FTIR with photoacoustic detection (FTIR-PAS) spectroscopy. A linear relationship is found between the suberin content measured through CP/MAS spectral areas and that measured gravimetrically. Furthermore, application of a partial least squares (PLS1) regression model to the NMR and gravimetric data sets clearly correlates the two sets, enabling suberin quantification with 90% precision. Suberin quantitation by FTIR-PAS spectroscopy is also achieved by a PLS1 regression model, giving 90% accurate estimates of the percentage of suberin in cork. Therefore, (13)C-CP/MAS NMR and FTIR-PAS proved to be useful and accurate noninvasive techniques to quantify suberin in cork, thus avoiding the traditional time consuming and destructive chemical methods.

Consequences of delay in surgical treatment of biliary disease.

BACKGROUND: Delay of laparoscopic cholecystectomy after the diagnosis of uncomplicated biliary disease is common at our institution. This study assessed the effect of delay of operation for symptomatic biliary disease. METHODS: A cohort of 251 patients was retrospectively reviewed at Parkland Memorial Hospital with follow-up available for 168 patients (67%) from January 1998 to July 1998. Data were analyzed using Student's t test and the chi-square test. RESULTS: Of the 88 patients with the initial diagnosis of biliary colic, 69 (78%) underwent elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Thirty-six patients made a total of 44 return visits the emergency department with a recurrent attack of biliary colic or a complication of gallstone disease. Mean operative time increased from 94 minutes for elective operations to 122 minutes for nonelective operations and hospital stay increased from 0.6 days to 6.1 days. Conversion to open operation increased from 6% in the elective group to 26% in the nonelective group. CONCLUSION: Delay of surgical therapy is associated with complications, increased operative times, higher conversion to open cholecystectomy, and prolonged hospitalization. We conclude that patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis should undergo early cholecystectomy.

Assessing work retention issues.

Within 6 months, a 10-member Nursing Services task force created and administered a literature-based retention survey. Tool development and administration is described. The 33-item tool was completed by 85% of the staff. Responses led to the formation of work groups, charged with addressing dissatisfiers and communicating implementation strategies to the hospital at large.

Early postpartum transition: progress in maternal identity and role attainment.

Sets of early postpartum transition variables and relationships among them examined in this study were: (a) Maternal attributes (parity, age, education); (b) infant feeding plan (extent of breast-feeding); (c) birthing conditions (supports and stressors during labor and delivery); (d) birthing experience (how well labor and delivery went, usefulness of postpartum learning resources, adequacy of hospital stay); and (e) transition markers (evaluation of parenting and of infant- and self-care capability). Infant feeding plan was related to supports but not to how well labor and delivery went. Whereas preparation for birthing was positively related to how well labor and delivery went, stressors were negatively related. The direct contribution of preparation for birthing to both parenting evaluation and infant- and self-care capability and of supports and usefulness of postpartum resources to self-care capability merits clinical attention to these variables. Research concerning types of birthing experience that may contribute to evaluation of parenting is needed.

Factors affecting visitation of sick newborns.

A study of visiting patterns to an intensive care nursery over a 6-month period was undertaken. Data on visits were obtained from 167 admissions, 99 of which were from infants transferred from other towns. In addition, the parents were interviewed to determine factors precluding visiting. Inborn (Group A) and out-of-town (Group B) data were analyzed. For Group A, the mean number of weekly visits was 6.59 (range, 1.7-16.5) and the total cost of visiting during hospitalization was $135.00 (range, 5.76-649.36); for Group B, the figures were 3.6 (range, 0.1-12.4) and $328.00 (range, 12.96-1523.36), respectively. Parents in Group B visited less often, made fewer telephone inquiries, and earned a lower salary than parents in Group A. Frequency of visits was correlated to social class. The most commonly identified factors limiting visiting were care of siblings, demands of work, cost of the trip, and distance.

Di- and tri-methoxystyryl derivatives of heterocyclic nitrogen compounds.

A series of mono-, di-, and trimethoxystyryl derivatives of heterocyclic nitrogen compounds were prepared to test the N-O-O triangulation hypothesis of Zee-Cheng and Cheng. Of 29 free bases submitted for KB cell culture test, only 2-(3,4-methylenedioxystyryl)benzoxazole and 4-(2,5-dimethoxystyryl)cinnoline were active (ED50 of 4 microgram/ml or less). Methiodide salts were more potent: 8 of 14 were active. 2-(2,4,6-Trimethoxystyryl)quinoline methiodide and 4-(2,4,5-trimethoxystyryl)quinoline methiodide had ED50 of 0.4 and 0.9 microgram/ml, respectively. The methiodides of 2-(2,3,4-, 4-(2,4,5-, 4-(2,4,6-, and 2,4-bis-(2,4,6-trimethoxystyryl)quinoline and 1-(2,4,6-trimethoxystyryl) isoquinoline and the propiodide of 4-(2,4,6-trimethoxystyryl)quinoline were active against P388 leukemia. Several of the active compounds do not conform to the dimensions of the Zee-Cheng and Cheng triangle.
