The Gianotti-Crosti syndrome.

The Gianotti-Crosti syndrome is an infrequently recognized disorder with distinctive characteristics. The eruption, which lasts for two to eight weeks, consists of large, flat-topped, nonpruritic papules on the face, buttocks, and limbs. Its onset may be preceded by fever and upper respiratory tract symptoms. Associated findings include generalized lymphadenopathy, anicteric hepatitis, and HBs antigenemia. Two children with the syndrome are described to bring this entity to the attention of pediatricians.

Acrodermatitis↗

Triad of lichen planus, myasthenia gravis, and thymoma.

Myasthenia gravis in a woman was followed by the development of severe erosive lichen planus and thymoma. Lichen planus is not ordinarily associated with other cutaneous or systemic disorders. The reported immunologic findings in some patients with lichen planus and especially the occasional association of lichen planus with certain disorders linked with immunologic disturbances suggest an autoimmune pathogenesis for this disorder.

Gaseous exchange and acid-base balance in premature lambs during liquid ventilation since birth.

Nine distressed premature lambs were studied before, during, and after ventilation with fluorocarbon liquid (FC-80). It was found that premature lambs, delivered by cesarean section, could be adequately ventilated with oxygenated liquid for period up to 3 hr. Using fluarocarbon liquid in conjunction with the described liquid breathing system, it was possible to maintain remarkably good pulmonary gas exchange and acid-base balance during normothermic conditions. In addition, peak intratracheal pressures measured during recovery from liquid ventilation were significanly reduced (P is less than 0.001) as compared with preliquid ventilation values. This improvement in lung function is in direct contrast to the deterioration in that of the adult animal following liquid ventilation as reported previously.

A virus from epidemic vomiting disease.

An illness consisting of vomiting, fever, and mild diarrhoea after a short incubation period was observed in a boarding school and reproduced in volunteers who received filtered extracts of faeces from a typical case. The main discriminatory diagnostic feature of the illness in volunteers was vomiting. The faeces contained no pathogenic bacteria nor any virus that could be detected in tissue cultures and there was no evidence that an infective agent could be grown in organ cultures of human intestine. The agent was shown to be ether stable and passed a 50-nm filter. Laboratory studies on another agent of uncertain significance and obtained in other epidemics are briefly described.

New antigen-antibody system in Australia-antigen-positive hepatitis.

After detergent treatment the 42 nm. Dane particles from the sera of patients with serum hepatitis separate into an outer coat of Australia antigen (Au-Ag) and an inner spherical 27 nm. diameter component resembling a rhinovirus. Antibody in post-hepatitic serum reacted with the inner component (but not with the outer) to yield aggregates resembling those seen in the liver of patients with serum hepatitis. Antibody to Au-Ag was not detected, before or after the attack of hepatitis. It is suggested that, in an attack of serum hepatitis, Au-Ag antibody develops but is subsequently cleared; antibody against the inner Dane component, however, persists.

Vaccination against Hong Kong influenza in Britain, 1968-9. A report to the Medical Research Council Committee on Influenza and other Respiratory Virus Vaccines.

Studies of the effect of Hong Kong (HK) influenza vaccine were made in adults and children in Great Britain during 1968 and 1969. The vaccines were administered intramuscularly and also by intranasal spray. The serum antibody response was studied in 284 subjects. Most developed rising titres to vaccine given intramuscularly and few to vaccine given intranasally. Deoxycholate-split vaccine was as potent as conventional whole virus vaccine. Antibody titres were maintained for months. Over 4000 subjects in factories, offices and schools were observed during the epidemic. The incidence of disease was not significantly reduced by either form of vaccination. A survey was made of epidemics in boarding schools in which some of the pupils had been vaccinated, in six with commercial polyvalent vaccine and in five with HK; there was a lower incidence of influenza in two schools vaccinated 2 or 4 weeks earlier with HK vaccine.
