Two lines of transgenic (Tg) mice expressing high (H) levels of the mutant P101L prion protein (PrP) developed a neurologic illness and central nervous system pathology indistinguishable from experimental murine scrapie; these mice were designated Tg(MoPrP-P101L)H. Brain homogenates from Tg(MoPrP-P101L)H mice were inoculated intracerebrally into CD-1 Swiss mice, Syrian hamsters, and Tg196 mice, Tg mice expressing the MoPrP-P101L transgene at low levels. None of the CD-1 mice developed central nervous system dysfunction, whereas approximately 10% of hamsters and approximately 40% of the Tg196 mice manifested neurologic signs between 117 and 639 days after inoculation. Serial transmission of neurodegeneration in Tg196 mice and Syrian hamsters was initiated with brain extracts, producing incubation times of approximately 400 and approximately 75 days, respectively. Although the Tg(MoPrP-P101L)H mice appear to accumulate only low levels of infections prions in their brains, the serial transmission of disease to inoculated recipients argues that prion formation occurs de novo in the brains of these uninoculated animals. These Tg mouse studies, taken together with similar findings in humans dying of inherited prion diseases, provide additional evidence that prions lack a foreign nucleic acid.
A survey of forty-three general interest magazines shows that popularizing materials about psychoanalysis greatly increased in 1920, peaked in 1921, and declined thereafter. The press was more favorable to Freud than has been assumed, for a number of writers accepted his theory of the unconscious and readily acknowledged the curative powers of psychoanalysis. But there was also much hostility to Freud, particularly to his sexual theories. The press was therefore more favorable to Jung and Adler, but especially to the British depth psychologists, who deemphasized sexuality while accepting the theory of a dynamic unconscious.

This study reports the long-term follow-up of a group of severely retarded cerebral-palsied children who were conditioned to control their oral drooling by means of an electronic device and shaping and conditioning procedures. Improvement was maintained in these children at nine months, and a larger group of children who were trained by the same method attained significant improvement in drooling both at one week and at three months.

Cerebral palsy children at Meldreth Manor, Hertfordshire, have been making and marketing electronic 'behaviour modification' devices. Dr Dorrie Rapp, psychologist at the school, describes how this has helped the children who participated and destroyed the artificial limitations placed on children who cannot perform the simpler tasks we all take for granted.
T-cell receptor antibodies (TCR alpha beta and TCR gamma delta) were used for a flow cytometric study of 114 specimens of lymphoid neoplasms and normal controls in order to find out whether or not the expression of TCR proteins differs in between normal and neoplastic tissues. It was found that TCR alpha beta population was predominant in all categories except T gamma lymphoproliferative disorder (TGLD), T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), and natural killer-like T-cell lymphoma (NKTL), in which three of 18, one of three, and two of two specimens, respectively, showed a predominant TCR gamma delta population. Natural killer cell lymphoma (NKL) showed essentially absence of either TCR alpha beta or TCR gamma delta protein. Therefore, TCR antibodies can be selectively used in cases of TGLD, T-ALL, and NKTL to substantiate their diagnoses. Furthermore, the absence of TCR protein is characteristic of NKL and helps to distinguish it from NKTL. Without the TCR antibodies, TCR gene analysis is sometimes needed to separate these two entities. When comparing with genotyping, 11 of 12 cases with TCR beta gene rearrangement and one of two cases with TCR alpha gene rearrangement expressed TCR alpha beta protein. One of four cases with TCR gamma gene rearrangement and both cases with TCR delta gene rearrangement expressed TCR gamma delta protein. Thus, TCR antibody phenotyping can reliably predict TCR genotypes under most circumstances.
