Comparing the accuracy of reversible hydrocolloid and elastomeric impression materials.

This in vitro investigation evaluated the accuracy of reversible hydrocolloid, vinyl polysiloxane and polyether elastic impression materials used in conjunction with two die stones. The authors made impressions in an experimental environment that approximated clinical conditions in regard to temperature and moisture. Analysis of variance and t-tests were used to compare corresponding measurements on experimental casts made from the various impression materials.

Effects of overdenture retention designs and implant orientations on load transfer characteristics.

Various approaches have been used for the retention and stabilization of implant-supported overdentures. This study examined photoelastically the simulated load transfer characteristics of a resilient cap attachment with moderately atrophied mandibular plastic models with two implant orientations. Comparison was made with overdentures supported by a splinting bar and a bar with distal resilient cap attachments. Stress patterns developed by simulated occlusal loading demonstrated little cross-arch load sharing and more uniform stress distribution with noninclined implants for all retention designs. The most equitable simulated occlusal force transfer was provided by the resilient cap attachments direct to the implants.

Provisional/transitional implant-retained fixed restorations.

Successful implant-retained restorations are the product of a disciplined and comprehensive approach to diagnosis, treatment planning, precise surgical and restorative procedures and continuing maintenance. The prudent use of provisional/transitional crowns and bridges is an important factor in the attainment of clinical success and patient acceptance of fixed prosthodontic implant dentistry.

A surgical guide for insertion of implant fixtures.

Successful prosthodontic rehabilitation of edentulous ridges with implants is dependent upon the alignment of multiple fixtures. A simple technique for fabricating a surgical guide is presented in this article.

A magnetically retained interim maxillary obturator.

A technique has been presented for the fabrication of a sectional interim maxillary obturator with retention augmented by a magnet. A tonogram revealed a 32 per cent decrease in hypernasality during speech when the prosthesis was worn (Fig. 12). The positive locking and continuous retentive quality of the prosthesis provided by the magnet permitted normal speech and mastication as well as an improved psychologic state during a very trying rehabilitation period.

The provisional fixed partial denture.

A discussion of the rationale and requirements of the provisional restoration in fixed prosthetic dentistry has been presented. The imporatnce of this phase of restorative densitry and a survey of techniques for making interim restorations were gleaned from a review of the literature. A method for the fabrication of a provisional fixed partial denture using an acrylic resin interocclusal record was described and illustrated.

The processed provisional splint in periodontal prostheses.

A technique has been described whereby a heat-processed provisional splint was fabricated with the factors of esthetics and long-term serviceability being of prime importance. Additional advantages of the use of a well-adapted provisional restoration in a periodontal prosthesis are as follows: (1) They facilitate periodontal treatment by allowing total visibility and access to surgical sites when the splint is removed. (2) The splinting effect may enhance healing and periodontal-ligament reattachment by stabilizing mobile abutments. (3) The patient's ability to render adequate home care for a fixed prosthetic restoration may be evaluated and reinforced before making case restorations. (4) The patient's cooperation is assured during an extended period of restorative care when an esthetic, comfortable, provisional splint is provided.
