Knowledge and attitude among child development project officers towards breast feeding.

A study was conducted to determine the knowledge and attitude about breast feeding (BF) amongst child development project officers (CDPOs) working in Integrated Child Development Services Scheme. A semi structured pretested questionnaire was administered. It was found that majority of respondent had correct knowledge about feeding of colostrum, age of initiation of breast feeding and introduction of semi-solid foods. Majority of CDPOs had the knowledge that consumption of dry fruits, milk and desi ghee would increase that breast milk secretion. The percentage of subjects who were aware that BF should be discontinued if mother is suffering from illness like breast cancer (48%) tuberculosis (57%), malaria (67%) and Diarrhoea (84%). There is need of continuing education of CDPOs for updating their knowledge.

Age, self-efficacy, and change in patients' adjustment to cancer.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this secondary analysis was to investigate cancer patients' self-care self-efficacy and measures of adjustment over time, as well as the role of self-care self-efficacy with measures of adjustment. The primary study was a longitudinal study of cancer patients and family members' adjustments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred seven cancer patients at all stages of cancer completed study instruments on one occasion; 181 completed the instruments 4 months later; and 124, 8 months later. Instruments included the Strategies Used by Patients to Promote Health (SUPPH) to measure self-care self-efficacy, the Functional Assessment of Cancer Treatment (FACT) to measure quality of life, the Profile of Mood States (POMS) to measure patients' mood disturbances, and the Symptom Distress Scale (SDS) to measure patients' concerns. RESULTS: Using analysis of variance, a series of one-way repeated measures used to investigate changes in cancer patients' self-care self-efficacy and measures of adjustment revealed significant decreases in patients' self-care self-efficacy (P = .01) and quality of life (P = .001) over time. Patients' symptoms and mood disturbances did not significantly change over time. The role of self-care self-efficacy with measures of adjustment was investigated using canonical correlations. For the predictor variables, subscores for coping and enjoying life on the SUPPH showed the strongest loadings, 0.83 and 0.94, respectively. On the dependent variables, the FACT was by far the most important variable, with a loading of 0.92. CONCLUSIONS: Results demonstrate that without intervention, cancer patients' measures of self-efficacy and adjustment decrease over time, and patients' self-efficacy influences their adjustment. Psychosocial interventions have been designed to increase self-efficacy and to enhance adjustment. Longitudinal study of efficacy-enhancing interventions is needed.

Cardiovascular recovery from acute laboratory stress: reliability and concurrent validity.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the value of laboratory measures of cardiovascular recovery across four criteria: reliability across multiple tasks, reliability across a 3-year time interval, ability to predict daily ambulatory blood pressure, and interrelationships with coronary risk factors and psychosocial variables. METHODS: Three hundred twenty-nine healthy adults (mean age = 27.1 years) completed a two-part protocol consisting of 1 day of laboratory testing and 1 day of ambulatory monitoring. The laboratory protocol included a 15-minute baseline assessment followed by three 5-minute laboratory challenges (mental arithmetic, speech, and handgrip). Five-minute recovery periods followed each exercise. One hundred twenty-five participants returned after 3 years to repeat the protocol. RESULTS: When aggregated across tasks, cardiovascular recovery showed acceptable levels of internal consistency (alpha values = 0.7) and proved relatively stable across time (r values = 0.22-0.35). Recovery values statistically improved the prediction of daily ambulatory readings above baseline and stress reactivity laboratory values (p values < .001) but were largely unrelated to coronary risk factors or psychosocial measures. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that cardiovascular recovery from acute laboratory stress can be treated as a stable individual difference variable that can -improve standard laboratory-based predictor models of ambulatory readings.

Some actions of chandonium iodide, a new short-acting muscle relaxant, in anaesthetized cats and on isolated muscle preparations.

1. The actions of the new skeletal muscle relaxant chandonium (HS310) on the cardiovascular, respiratory and skeletal muscle systems of the cat under chloralose anaesthesia and on chick and rat isolated skeletal muscle preparations have been described. 2. In the cat chandonium exhibited a potent, competitive, non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking action that was rapid in onset and of short duration. It possessed a selective atropine-like action at the cardiac vagus neuro-effector junction but little or no ganglion blocking activity. Neither adrenergic neurone noralpha-adrenoceptor blocking properties were evident. 3. Unlike tubocurarine, chandonium was without effect on the airways system of the anaesthetized cat. 4. Chandonium possessed weak anticholinesterase action. It is conceivable that this effect may contribute to its short duration of action. 5. The results from these studies suggest that chandonium may have possible clinical applications as a short-acting muscle relaxant.

Health impacts of AT&T's Total Life Concept (TLC) program after five years.

For study group participants who returned for measurement in 1988, the health promotion program appeared to have a limited effect on health risk indicators and a positive effect on health-related attitudes. The data suggest that decreases in smoking and alcohol consumption may be attributed to the program. The combined evidence after 5 years of improved health behaviors, better health attitudes, and self-reports of lifestyle improvements suggests that the program has a positive impact on habit and attitude changes.

A clinico epidemiological study on acute viral infection of brain among children admitted in North Bengal Medical College, West Bengal.

A clinico epidemiological prospective study was carried out on acute viral infection of brain among children admitted in a rural based medical college from September '99 to Oct '01. Out of 80 cases, 8 cases (10%) of aseptic meningitis, 35 cases (43.75%) of encephalitis and 37 cases (6.25%) of meningo-encephalitis were found. Overall case fatality was 47.5% and found higher (77%) among normally nourished children in comparison to malnourished children (47.5%). Virological investigation did not isolate any known Flavivirus, Herpes Simplex virus (HSV) and Measles virus; nor any serological evidence against these viruses.
