Arteriovenous malformations complicating benign bone tumours may not be amenable to surgical treatment either because of their extensive size and likelihood of recurrence or because of their location. Transcatheter embolisation may then be used either as the definitive treatment or as a prelude to safe surgical intervention. Patients presenting with arteriovenous malformations in association with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and vertebral haemangioma are presented who were treated by transcatheter embolisation, using Oxycel and Gelfoam. A haemodynamically significant shunt was obliterated in one patient and in the other an excellent clinical response was obtained facilitating subsequent surgical management.

A retrospective analysis of the pituitary fossa in 93 patients with Cushing's syndrome is presented. Radiological evidence of a pituitary tumour was found in 20 of 86 patients with pituitary-dependent disease (23%). In 11 of the 20 patients, the diagnosis depended on analysis of lateral tomograms. None of the seven patients with disease which was not pituitary-dependent had evidence of an abnormal sella. One of 20 controls without known endocrine disease had an abnormal sella.
Thermographic examinations of the breasts were carried out in 359 women, most of whom had mammary symptoms. Of the 195 patients with abnormal thermograms, 27 had cancer of the breast, 53 had benign lesions, and 115 had no confirmed organic disease. The incidence of false-positive thermograms was 59%. Of the 164 patients with normal thermograms, 116 had no confirmed organic disease, 41 had benign lesions, and 7 had cancer. The incidence of false-negative mammary thermograms was 29%.We conclude that mammary thermography is of no practical value in the differential diagnosis of symptomatic mammary disease.
