Two hundred and ninety-one patients, with an average age of 69 in 1965, referred to a psychogeriatric clinic were studied. All but 20 were traced. 167 died and 104 remained alive. 73 were institutionalized. Medical, psychiatric and social data was available for all. Using mortality tables, we calculated the time of death for each patient. The group that exceeded their life expectancy was compared to the group that died prematurely. Significant positive correlations with longevity were self-referral, higher education, skilled work, independent income and absence of dementia. Females and orphans also lived longer. Living alone, dependency on children and conflict with one's spouse predisposed to institutionalization. Curiously, the hardships of being in wartime Europe and/or in a concentration camp increased life expectancy and mitigated against institutionalization. An attempt is made to correlate our findings with other studies and to explain our results.

Thirty of 1720 temporal bones from the Wittmaack's Collection contain nonoperated acoustic neuromas, 22 of them large tumors. Histologically, each tumor has to be considered as an individual. Most of the tumors show a mixture of Antoni type A and B. Tumor vascularization is pronounced in half the cases. Vessels of the internal acoustic meatus are found in all cases. Protein contents of the perilymphatic spaces is medium to pronounced in 23 of 30 cases in comparison to the small protein contents of the healthy side. Ganglion geniculi is invaded in 11 cases (9 von Recklinghausen's disease), Ganglion Scarpae in 26 cases (9 von Recklinghausen's disease), and Ganglion spirale in 9 cases (7 von Recklinghausen's disease). Cochlear and vestibular nerve fibers within the internal auditory meatus were affected by the tumor in 28 of 30 cases, the facial nerve only in 11 cases, among them 9 cases of von Recklinghausen's disease. Twenty-six of 30 schwannomas have a portion within the cribriform area of the cochlea fundus, which explains the limitation to radical tumor surgery without damage of the cochlear nerve. These histological findings explain the site of damage of hearing to expand between the cochlea to the auditory brain stem nuclei, and support the audiological experience that a correlation of "acoustic neuroma" and "retrocochlear lesion" is often not correct.

A taxonomic study of Streptomyces X-14077 (NRRL 8144), which produces a water-soluble purple-red pigment complex, revealed it to be a new species which has been named Streptomyces echinoruber sp. nov. The pigment complex was produced in deep culture fermentation and isolated by solvent extraction and concentration. The major pigment component, rubrolone, has low toxicity and may have potential as a food coloring agent. It appears to be devoid of antibiotic activity.
The studies reported here stemmed from a personal report by Geiman on the capacity of the 4-aminoquinoline amodiaquin to inhibit in vitro maturation of ring stages of the chloroquine-resistant Monterey strain of Plasmodium falciparum. This observation, confirmed in owl monkeys infected with this strain, led to a comparison of the activities of chloroquine, amodiaquin, amopyroquin, and dichlorquinazine (12,278 RP) against infections with various chloroquine-susceptible and chloroquine-resistant strains. The results showed that: (i) these 4-aminoquinolines were essentially equally active against infections with chloroquine-susceptible strains and (ii) the activities of amodiaquin, amopyroquin, and dichlorquinazine were reduced significantly in the face of chloroquine resistance, but (iii) well-tolerated doses of these compounds would cure infections with strains that fully resisted treatment with maximally tolerated doses of chloroquine. Two other 4-aminoquinolines, SN-8137 and SN-9584, which also exhibited activity against chloroquine-resistant parasites in vitro, displayed curative activity in monkeys infected with a chloroquine-resistant strain. These observations show that there is cross-resistance among the 4-aminoquinolines, confirming earlier findings, but indicate that the dimensions of this phenomenon are sufficiently limited so that some derivatives are therapeutically effective against infections refractory to maximally tolerated doses of chloroquine.
Sixty-one patients with cystic fibrosis were studied to determine the relationship between degree of compliance with taking antibiotics and severity of the disease. The compliance rate was high in these patients, suggesting that perception of the severity of the disease and the potential consequences of discontinuing medication is a principal factor.
A new more comprehensive system for cataloging audiovisual materials is described. Existing audiovisual cataloging systems contain mostly descriptive information, publishers' or producers' summaries, and order information. This paper discusses the addition of measurable learning objectives to this standard information, thereby enabling the potential user to determine what can be learned from a particular audiovisual unit. The project included media in nursing only. A committee of faculty and students from the University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Nursing reviewed the materials. The system was field-tested at nursing schools throughout Alabama; the schools offered four different types of programs. The system and its sample product, the AVLOC catalog, were also evaluated by medical librarians, media specialists, and other nursing instructors throughout the United States.
BACKGROUND: Cardiac performance is severely depressed in septic shock. Endotoxin has been implicated as the causative agent in Gram-negative sepsis, but similar abnormalities are encountered in Gram-positive sepsis. We investigated the influence of the major exotoxin of Staphylococcus aureus, staphylococcal alpha-toxin, in isolated perfused rat hearts. METHODS AND RESULTS: Alpha-toxin 0.25 to 1 microg/mL caused a dose-dependent increase in coronary perfusion pressure that more than doubled. In parallel, we noted a decrease in left ventricular developed pressure and the maximum rate of left ventricular pressure rise (dP/dt(max)), dropping to a minimum of <60% of control. These changes were accompanied by a liberation of thromboxane A(2) and prostacyclin into the coronary effluent. The release of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, potassium, and lactate did not surpass control heart values, and leukotrienes were also not detected. Indomethacin, acetylsalicylic acid, and the thromboxane receptor antagonist daltroban fully blocked the alpha-toxin-induced coronary vasoconstrictor response and the decrease in left ventricular developed pressure and dP/dt(max), whereas the lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid, the platelet activating factor antagonist WEB 2086, and the alpha-adrenergic antagonist phentolamine were entirely ineffective. Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase even enhanced the alpha-toxin-induced increase in coronary perfusion pressure and the loss in myocardial performance. CONCLUSIONS: Purified staphylococcal alpha-toxin provokes coronary vasoconstriction and loss in myocardial contractility. The responses appear to be largely attributable to the generation of thromboxane and are even enhanced when the endogenous nitric oxide synthesis is blocked. Bacterial exotoxins, such as staphylococcal alpha-toxin, may thus be implicated in the loss of cardiac performance encountered in Gram-positive septic shock.

Industry-university cooperative research ventures offer significant benefits to sponsoring firms and university scientists alike. Society also benefits, since such ventures can accelerate the emergence of new technologies and the practical application of these technologies to important new products and services. Potential issues of concern to industrial sponsors and university researchers, such as the timing of publication of research results, can be resolved through well-designed research contracts responsive to the needs and expectations of both parties.
