Congenital, irreducible, permanent lateral dislocation of the patella.

This is a report of 6 cases (one bilateral) of congenital irreducible, permanent lateral dislocation of the patella, ages 5 to 14; 2 patients were normal and 4 were mongoloid. The dislocation was reduced by means of a newly-devised surgical reconstruction of anterior attachments of nearly all of the para-articular bone and ligamentous structures. The 2-year follow-up results are satisfactory.

A human model of allergic conjunctivitis.

Using the method of refractometry to measure protein concentration in tears, a simple model was developed to evaluate the allergic response in humans. Timothy grass pollen was instilled into the cul de sac of a human subject, and the protein content of the subject's tears was sampled every 15 minutes for three hours. Once the time course of this experiment was predictable, various eye medications were instilled into the subject's eye 30 minutes after allergic challenge. It was noted that 1.0% and 0.1% prednisolone, each combined with 0.12% phenylephrine hydrochloride, as well as 1% epinephryl borate eye drops, produced an almost immediate return to normal of tear protein levels, whereas 1.0% medrysone, 0.1% fluorometholone, 1.0% prednisolone, and 0.12% prednisolone had less pronounced effects on reduction of elevated tear protein concentration.

Effect of freezing and storing on the biological properties of macrophages.

Storage of intact macrophages would be a useful procedure for laboratories studying the biological functions of these cells. Oil-induced guinea pig peritoneal cells were harvested and frozen at an ultra-low temperature using a cryoprotective media. Studies of the biological properties of the frozen cells upon thawing indicated that the cells retained viability for a fairly long period of time, were metabolically active and comparable to normal cells in morphology. Indications of activation were obtained in enhanced phagocytic activity and significant decrease in migration of the stored cells.

Effect of sulfur-containing dietary supplements on gizzard lining erosions.

Three experiments were conducted with crystalline amino acid basal diets containing 5% isolated soy protein to ascertain the supplementary effect of sulfur-containing compounds on blood constituents and gizzard lining erosion. At the 0.40% methionine dietary level, the plasma albumin protein values were improved by supplements of sulfate and fishery products, whereas, the globulin values were variable. At the methionine content of 0.55%, the hematocrit value was also increased. Taurine, cysteic acid or fish meal ash did not improve the growth of chicks fed 0.45% methionine. Gizzard lining erosions were quite prevalent and severe when chicks were fed inadequate methionine and were improved considerably but not totally prevented by the 0.70 to 1.25% levels of sulfur amino acids.
