The Power Equity Guide: attending to gender in family therapy.

In the past two decades, feminist scholars have challenged the field of family therapy to incorporate the organizing principle of gender in its theory, practice, and training. In this paper, we introduce a training, research, and therapeutic tool that provides guidance for addressing or observing gender and power differentials in the practice of family therapy. As a training tool, the Power Equity Guide helps trainees to translate their theoretical understanding of feminist principles into specific behaviors in therapy. Researchers and supervisors can use the Power Equity Guide to evaluate the practice of gender-informed family therapy. We also provide specific suggestions for its use by trainers, supervisors, therapists, and researchers.

A field efficacy evaluation of emamectin benzoate for the control of sea lice on Atlantic salmon.

This study evaluated the efficacy of emamectin benzoate, 0.2% aquaculture premix, against sea lice on Atlantic salmon in eastern Canada. Salmon pens received either emamectin benzoate, orally, in feed at 50 micrograms/kg body weight/day for 7 consecutive days, or the same diet with no added medication. The site veterinarian had the option of administering a bath treatment with azamethiphos to any pen in the trial. The mean number of lice per fish was lower (P < 0.05) in the experimental group when measured 1, 3, 4, and 6 weeks after the start of medication. Treatment efficacy was 70%, 88%, 95%, and 61%, respectively. Three azamethiphos bath treatments were applied to each control pen during the trial, while the treatment pens received no bath treatment. No gravid female parasites were observed on any fish in the treatment group, while these life stages were observed on fish in the control group. Orally administered emamectin benzoate was palatable and highly effective for control of sea lice on salmon.

Infusing a diversity perspective into human development courses.

Students of human development must be well versed in issues of diversity if they are to appreciate the importance of developmental contextualism, and comprehend policy and professional issues related to poverty and ethnicity. One difficulty in addressing diversity issues in the minimal empirical foundation, a fact that was confirmed in Study 1 by content analyses of research on child and adolescent development. More problematic, sampling patterns reinforce a deficit perspective on low-income minority adolescents. Study 2 describes evaluation findings from a curriculum enhancement project, in which multicultural content was infused into a sequence of human development courses. Significant changes in attitudes toward poverty and racial minorities were observed in targeted courses, relative to comparison groups. Evidence is presented that this curriculum project decreased ethnocentrism and increased critical thinking skills and awareness of poverty as a developmental risk factor. Implications for pedagogy, research, and the culture of higher education are discussed.
