An account is given in this paper of equipment, techniques, clinical tests, and investigations for laboratory diagnosis required for an animal experiment on splenectomised store pigs suspicious of eperythrozoonosis (EEZ). The clinical, bacterioscopic, haematological, and biochemical data recorded from the experiment on splenectomised store pigs with suspicion of EEZ were helpful in reproducing both symptoms indicative of EEZ and relevant parameters of laboratory diagnosis. The diagnosis of EEZ, made in the first place on the basis of clinical, bacterioscopic, and haematological findings, was thus confirmed. Conclusions of general validity for users of animal experiments for EEZ diagnosis were also drawn and will prove helpful in establishing safe diagnosis in dubious cases. The animal experiment proved useful in following up the interactions between all parameters checked, which will contribute, no doubt, to better understanding of the pathophysiological processes associated with this disease.
40 labour employed with the production of polyurethan had been subject to a subtile, clinical, neurological, psychological and neuropsychological examination. Troubles of the respiratory and the gastrointestinal tracts had been predominantly, neurasthenic symptoms had been registered in 22.5%. It is recommended to perform in all the exposed labour a neurological basis examination and to utilize the psychological-neurological inquiry (PNF).
Syncope on the one hand and drop attacks on the other hand are clearly and factually defined in this paper. The conditions are differentiated from one another and also from other cerebral attacks. Thus, an inappropriate hyperextension of terminology beyond the limits of acceptability is counteracted.

During lytic infection SV40 T antigen binds specifically to three different regions of the SV40 DNA to initiate viral DNA replication and to regulate early and late transcription. We have used the recently described plasmids pKB1, containing a 23-bp oligonucleotide coding for site I, pdl1085 containing sites II and III together with SV40 specific flanking sequences, and as a control pATC, a plasmid which contains all three binding sites (D. Müller et al. (1987), Virology 161, 81-91) to analyze the differential binding of T antigen to these individual binding sites in the course of an SV40 infection. We found that shortly after infection the amount of bound DNA increased with the concentration of T antigen reaching a steady-state level at about 20 hr after infection. In comparison to binding at site I, binding to site II appeared with a delay of about 8-9 hr corresponding to the onset of viral DNA replication. The correlation between binding of T antigen to site II and the SV40 DNA replication could be further corroborated by using T antigen from the heat-sensitive mutant tsA58 which completely failed to bind to site II at nonpermissive temperature but exhibited a residual binding to site I. This reduced binding to site I proved insufficient for the proper functioning of autorepression. Our results support the hypothesis that distinctly different subclasses of T-antigen binding to site I or site II may exist.
Acid/neutral fractions of 4 chlorinated drinking water samples were tested for mutagenicity in the Ames' test and injected intraperitoneally to 10- and 20-day-old Wistar rats at doses of 200 and 100 liters of water/kg body weight. Cytochrome P-450 mediated enzyme activities of ethylmorphine-N-demethylase (EMND), 7-ethoxycoumarin-O-deethylase (ECOD), 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and 7-pentoxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (PEROD) were determined in the 9000 g supernatant fraction of liver homogenate. EROD was introduced by the concentrates. The induction was related to the mutagenic activity. About 4-fold increase in activity was observed with the most mutagenic sample. PEROD was also slightly enhanced. EMND and ECOD activities were not affected by the lower dose, but the higher dose caused inhibition of 30-40%. Although the extracts were not toxic to bacteria, they were unexpectedly toxic to rats. It is concluded that the samples contained 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC) type inducer(s).
The aim of the investigation was to classify urethral variability as seen on micturating cystograms of 193 young girls and to study the physiological and pathological significance of the various shapes. It was shown that significant abnormalities were associated with all types of urethral configuration. Comparison of urethral shapes and clinical symptoms (dysuria, enuresis) did not show any particular appearance. Differentiation of urethral shapes into those that were dilated, and therefore suggested a stenosis, and those that were not dilated, showed no significant correlation between clinical and radiological findings.
The Zeiss SLC measuring system for examining the anterior segment in slit light permits direct digital image storage and analysis. For long-term studies the reproducibility of individual images can be improved. Furthermore, the data can be quickly processed to yield indices which can be used to characterize the cataract: 1) the integral of an axial densitogram as a criterion of average lens opacity, and 2) the difference between the linear regressions of the densitograms of the anterior and posterior lens halves as a criterion of cataract form (e.g., nuclear vs. cortical cataract).
The metabolic response to different levels of human milk protein intake was studied in 23 appropriate (AGA) and 19 small for gestational age (SGA) infants of very low birthweight (VLBW) on the eighth day of life. The infants received from birth, either fresh preterm human milk or human milk fortified with lyophilized human milk (6 g per 100 ml). Thus, the protein intake ranged from 1.98 to 3.28 g/kg/d in the AGA- and from 1.94 to 3.34 g/kg/d in the SGA-infants. Alpha-amino-nitrogen and bile acid concentrations in serum and total- as well as alpha-amino-nitrogen excretion in the urine were measured. When the protein intake was less than 2.5 g/kg/d no differences between the groups could be found in any of the parameters directly related to nitrogen metabolism, but a significantly higher concentration of bile acids in serum was found in the SGA-infants. On protein intakes of more than 2.5 g/kg/d the SGA-infants responded with higher alpha-amino-nitrogen as well as total bile acids concentrations in the serum and also with higher excretions of total- as well as alpha-amino-nitrogen in the urine when compared to the AGA-infants. The differences between the groups became more pronounced with an increasing protein intake. The data suggest that on the eighth day of life SGA-infants are more sensitive to an excessive protein intake than AGA-infants. Hepatocellular dysfunctions as a result of intrauterine growth retardation seems to be an important factor in this special metabolic situation. Bile acid concentration in the serum can be used as a good marker to detect this. The observed differences in the metabolic capacity to handle protein between AGA- and SGA-infants on the eighth day of life have to be considered in the nutritional management of VLBW-infants.
Endoscopic retrograde laser lithotripsy of common bile duct stones is a new technique which can be carried out through the endoscope without anaesthesia using ordinary endoscopic equipment. In the method described here a flashlamp pulsed Neodymium YAG laser (wave length 1064 nm) was used. Light energy was transmitted along a highly flexible quartz fibre with a diameter of 0.2 mm. This new technique was used in nine patients with concrements in the common bile duct, which could not be removed with the established endoscopic techniques. In eight of the nine the concrements (maximum diameter 4.7 x 3.1 cm) could be fragmented and in six the fragments could be extracted from the common bile duct. The total energy required was 80-300 J; complications were not observed.
Like growth factors or hormones, the DNA tumor virus simian virus 40 can stimulate quiescent cells to re-enter the S-phase. Time course experiments revealed similar kinetics for the stimulation of cellular DNA synthesis by growth factors or SV40 infection, although there was a delay in DNA synthesis of about 2 h in the case of the SV40 infection. The analysis of the transcriptional activation of proto-oncogenes in cells stimulated by serum or SV40 infection revealed an enhanced transcription of a common set of proto-oncogenes, including c-myc and c-fos. Early on after infection of quiescent cells SV40 induced in addition the transcription of the c-sis gene which did not occur with UV-irradiated SV40 virus. Furthermore, we could demonstrate the presence of growth stimulating activities in medium from SV40 infected quiescent cells, which triggered quiescent cells to re-enter the cell cycle. These data suggest that SV40 might stimulate quiescent cells by inducing the transcription and ultimately the release of growth-factors.
Polyneuropathies by long term alcohol dependent patients are characterized by symmetric distal type of manifestation. By abstinence we found a diminution of symptoms. It is a point of view for treatment and diagnostic.
