Cryptococcal chorioretinitis.

A 40-year-old man developed obstructive hydrocephalus of uncertain cause followed by bilateral intraocular inflammation, which was initially diagnosed as toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. When visual acuity in the left eye decreased to no light perception and vision in the right eye was failing, a diagnostic enucleation of the blind left eye was performed. A diagnosis of cryptococcal endophthalmitis was established and the remaining right eye showed improvement after systemic anticryptococcal therapy.

Effects of maternal themes upon death imagery.

Two samples (n = 47, n = 45) of women were studied to determine the impact of maternal messages upon death imagery as measured by the Holtzmann Inkblots. In both samples a maternal symbiotic message significantly decreased death imagery. A maternal monosymbiotic message resulted in decreased death imagery in only one sample. Control messages produced no changes in death imagery. The findings are congruent with theories that link death anxiety with concern about separation from parental figures.

Cryptococcal granuloma presenting as an intracranial mass.

A case of cryptococcosis of the central nervous system presenting as an intracranial space occupying lesion is described. The world literature and epidemiology of this unusual disease are surveyed. Problems in the diagnosis and the use of modern diagnostic techniques are discussed. The authors suggest that cryptococcosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of an intracranial space occupying lesion.

Intravenous infusion of a dextrin, Caloreen, in human subjects: metabolic studies.

1. Caloreen, a glucose-polymer dextrin infused into human volunteers, although producing a clear increase in total plasma carbohydrate did not produce a satisfactory increase in plasma glucose levels or serum insulin levels. 2. Urinary losses were high and although small fragments of the dextrin (suggesting metabolic breakdown of the dextrin) were demonstrated in the urine, no suppression of plasma free fatty acid, glucagon or immediate increase in the respiratory quotient were noted, suggesting that the metabolism is too slow to make it useful for parenteral nutrition in its present form. 3. A dextrin with fewer branch-links might be more suitable.

The symbiosis scale: inkblot responses of children from symbiotically and non-symbiotically oriented families.

Describes the development and subsequent attempts at validation of an objective measure of the concept of symbiosis based on children's responses to inkblot stimuli. It was hypothesized that children reared in symbiosis inducing versus non-symbiosis inducing family settings would obtain higher scores on the symbiosis scale. The hypothesis was supported in a first study involving 36 children evidencing neurotic and personality disorders (p less than .01), but was not supported in a second study involving 35 children of whom over 70 percent evidenced borderline psychotic or psychotic disorders. In a third study involving 27 neurotic and personality disordered children the scaled again differentiated between children from symbiotically oriented versus non-symbiotically oriented families (p less than .01).
