Species specificity in the isoelectric spectra of immunoglobulin light chains.

Light chains isolated from normal immunoglobulin give rise to a finite number of discrete bands when analyzed by isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel. The positions and relative intensities of the bands were identical in light chains isolated from different individuals of a species, but clear differences were evident when light chains of several mammalian species were compared.

Taxonomic position and seasonal variations in marine neritic environment of some gram-negative antibiotic-producing bacteria.

Six marine bacteria which synthesize macromolecular antibiotics were isolated from neritic waters on the French Mediterranean coast, and their frequency recorded over two successive years. They appeared in relatively large numbers during the period August to December, and can be identified as marine pseudomonads; however, the low guaninecytosine ratio of their DNA, lack of catalase and specific self-inhibition are not compatible with the characteristics of the genus Pseudomonas. Two produced violacein, usually synthesized by bacteria belonging to the genus Chromobacterium. Their taxonomic position is discussed.

Deletions in immunoglobulin polypeptide chains as evidence for breakage and repair in DNA.

The partial sequence of the light chain of the myeloma-like immunoglobulin Sac shows a large deletion in its variable region. The sequence provides evidence that the corresponding gene was formed by the repair of DNA broken at nonhomologous positions. Data from other immunoglobulin (heavy) chains containing large deletions are compatible with their genes also being the result of DNA breakage and nonhomologous repair. Single homologous reciprocal exchanges in DNA networks at immunoglobulin loci could be the cause of the nonhomologous breaks. The relevance of these events to the generation of normal antibody variability remains to be determined.

A device for recording automatic audio tape recording.

Adaptation of a commercially available timer for use as a means of operating an audio tape recorder several times during the day is described. Data on a mother's rates of commanding her children were collected via both physically present observer and recorder methods in order to compare the usefulness of the recordings with direct observation. There was a high positive relationship between observer-recorder command rates, with the observer rates being consistently higher, when data were collected via both methods simultaneously as well as at different points in time.
