Absent-mindedness in shops: its incidence, correlates and consequences.
This paper describes a questionnaire study of absent- mindedness in shops, and an analysis of 166 letters written by 67 individuals who felt themselves to be wrongly accused of shoplifting . A total of 150 men and women were asked how often they had experienced each of 24 varieties of mental lapse while shopping. If they had not actually suffered a particular lapse, they were asked to judge its likelihood of occurrence. Approximately half of the sample also completed the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire ( CFQ ). Lapses carrying the risk of shop-lifting accusations were reported as occurring far less frequently, and were judged as less likely, than either ' embarrassing ' or 'nuisance' lapses. However, an examination of the circumstances leading up to accusations of shoplifting indicated that high risk lapses can occur when ill health, extreme preoccupation and distraction are combined with unwise supermarket practices. A positive and significant correlation was found between the CFQ and the Absent- Mindedness in Shops Questionnaire ( AMSQ ). A factor analysis of the AMSQ revealed a very pervasive general factor, together with a risk appreciation factor. The findings supported the view that responses to both the CFQ and the AMSQ reflected characteristic differences in the management of some superordinate attentional control resource.

[Glycosylated proteins and control of the diabetic: use of continuous flow insulin pumps by the subcutaneous route].
Ten insulin-dependent diabetic patients were controlled using a portable insulin pump (Pye Dynamic MS 16). They were studied for approximately 10 weeks. The responses of fasting blood glucose, glycosylated serum proteins and glycosylated hemoglobin were studied. Glycosylated serum proteins and glycosylated hemoglobin were measured a semi-automated colorimetric method. Although the fasting blood glucose decreased by about 45%, its variability underlines its limitation as a metabolic control parameter. Glycosylated hemoglobin decreased by 9% in the first week, and 21% by the tenth week. The glycosylated serum proteins decrease was 39% in the first week and 50% by the third week. Four insulin-dependent pregnant women had a similar but less rapid, decrease in the 3 variables compared to the other 6 cases. In all ten diabetics treatment lowered the 3 variables toward normal levels when compared to 73 insulin dependent diabetic patients using the classic method of daily insulin injections. The kinetic patterns of the 3 variables confirms the usefulness of glycosylated serum proteins which respond to altered levels of control more rapidly (10 days) than glycosylated hemoglobin. This is shown both by the response to improved control in insulin-dependent diabetics and secondly by their changes after insulinoma removal. The physiopathological significance of serum protein glycosylation is at present uncertain.
[Generalized eruptive histiocytoma. Apropos of a case. Review of the literature].
About one case of generalized eruptive histiocytoma (G.E.H.) (the second French case) and about thirteen others cases mentioned in literature, the authors remind the clinical, histological, immuno-histochemical and evolutive aspects of this misunderstanding disease, described by Winkelmann in 1963. After having classed it, in the group of nodular, non X, non lipidique, benign histiocytosis, they expose the imprecision of this nosological limits of the G.E.H., in comparison to the bordering diseases. At last, they insist upon the fact that the few number of cases published up to this time, the lack of stand back and the casual transformation into a multicentric reticulo-histiocytosis must induce to watchfulness by requiring for each patient affected by G. E. H. and for a long time, a regular, clinical, radiological and hematological supervision.

Reactivation of infant memory.
Three-month-old infants learned to activate a crib mobile by means of operant footkicks. Retention of the conditioned response was assessed during a cued recall test with the nonmoving mobile. Although forgetting is typically complete after an 8-day retention interval, infants who received a reactivation treatment--a brief exposure to the reinforcer 24 hours before retention testing--showed no forgetting after retention intervals of either 2 or 4 weeks. Further, the forgetting function after a reactivation treatment did not differ from the original forgetting function. These experiments demonstrate that (i) "reactivation" or "reinstatement" is an effective mechanism by which early experiences can continue to influence behavior over lengthy intervals and (ii) memory deficits in young infants are best viewed as retrieval deficits.

Automated measurement of total cholesterol and triglycerides, in "tandem," on the discrete sample analyzer, Gilford System 3500.
We have developed an automated procedure on a discrete sample analyzer, Gilford System 3500, which alternately measures both total serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations as a "tandem" procedure. We used Dow Diagnostic's fully enzymatic, colorimetric reagents and aqueous standards to calculate unknowns ratiometrically. Cholesterol and then triglyceride reagent are dispensed into alternate cups; the produced color at 500 nm is measured after an ambient temperature incubation of 20 min. Reagent and sample carryover is less than 1.6%. Correlation coefficients of 0.997 for comparison for both automated tests with the manual methods at 30 degrees C and a typical CV of less than 2.0% show this "tandem" procedure to be reliable and accurate.

Automated activation energy.
A method and equipment used for automated determination of activation energies on a single sample are described. Essentially identical results are obtained in both automated and manual methods. The automated method is particularly valuable for minimizing the amounts of enzyme, substrate, and time required. Further, errors in repetitive pipetting and calculation are eliminated.

Language differences and the family planning survey.
Language is an important but often neglected source of non-sampling error in family planning surveys. This paper examines the problems of language usage and of translation, in KAP surveys in particular, using examples from African and other research experience. The authors emphasize that language pervades all stages of family planning surveys, pointing out that interpretations of survey results should take into account the possibility of the influence of language differences. Various measures are suggested that can contribute to minimizing this source of response error.
Rosette formation by canine peripheral blood lymphocytes.
The surface membrane characteristics of canine peripheral blood lymphocytes were investigated using erythrocyte (E) and erythrocyte antibody complement (EAC) rosette assays and immunofluorescent staining techniques. Canine thymus-derived lymphocytes formed nonimmune E rosettes with human and guinea pig erythrocytes at approximately the same percentages (mean percentage 36.3 and 32.4, respectively). Rosettes did not form with erythrocytes from seven other animal species. Cell surface immunoglobulins were demonstrable in a small percentage (4%) of the E rosette-forming lymphocyte population. Fragments of human erythrocytes inhibited E rosette formation by intact human red cells, but did not result in a significant decrease in rosette formation by intact guinea pig erythrocytes; likewise, guinea pig fragments had no inhibitory effect on rosette formation by human erythrocytes, demonstrating that separate receptors were required for the two red cell types. EAC rosette formation was not affected by addition of intact or fragmented human and guinea pig erythrocytes. Canine bone marrow-derived lymphocytes were characterized by immunoglobulin on the cell surface and EAC rosette formation. Serial tests of lymphocytes from one dog revealed a wide variation in percentage of cells forming E and EAC rosettes. A close correlation was observed between the immunoglobulin-bearing cells (mean percentage 46.6) and those forming EAC rosettes (mean percentage 49.3).
