[Effects of copper mine tailings on growth and development and physiological function of wheat].

Through pot culture experiments, the effects of Tonling copper mine tailings on growth and development and physiological function of wheat were investigated in this paper. The results showed that the seeds of wheat could germinate in copper mine tailings, but seed germination percentage and germination rate were lower than that in control. High ratio tailings decreased seedling height. Tailings decreased chlorophyll contents, but didn't effect on chlorophyll a/b. Compared with control, tailings significantly inhibited root growth and decreased root number. Tailings increased root and shoot biomass and significantly increased root/shoot ratio of wheat. The permeability of cell membrane and the free proline content in leaves of wheat increased with the increase of the ratio of tailings, they were relative tolerance index of wheat to copper tailings stress.

[Analysis of causes of death and YPLL on residents in the industrial pollution area in Chongqing from 1991 to 1998].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the causes of death in residents living in the area of industrial pollution in Chongqing. METHODS: Mortality rate, sequence of causes of death, years of potential life lost (YPLL) and the valued years of potential life lost (VYPLL) were used to analyze causes of death in 1991 - 1998. Community not polluted by industry was chosen to serve as control. RESULTS: The annual average mortality rate of the residents was 7.34 per thousand (standard mortality rate 4.61 per thousand). The sequence of major causes of death was shown as below: malignant tumors (mortality rate 198.07/10(5), standard mortality rate 126.35/10(5)), cerebrovascular diseases (mortality rate 159.13/10(5), standard mortality rate 92.66/10(5)), respiratory system diseases (mortality rate 107.33/10(5), standard mortality rate 84.85/10(5)), cardiac diseases (mortality rate 95.36/10(5), standard mortality rate 59.37/10(5)) and accidental deaths (mortality rate 47.08/10(5), standard mortality rate 43.28/10(5)). Among malignant tumors, lung cancer took the lead with a mortality rate of 65.49/10(5) (standard mortality rate 45.27/10(5)). In both sequences of standard rates of YPLL and VYPLL for major causes of deaths, accidental death was always took the first place. CONCLUSION: In order to reduce mortality rate of the residents in the area, it is necessary to strengthen the administration of natural and social environment of the area.

[Hypotony following vitreoretinal surgery].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence and risk factors of hypotony in patients who have undergone vitrectomy for complex retinal detachment. METHODS: The medical records of 142 patients with complex retinal detachments who underwent vitrectomy were reviewed. Hypotony was defined as a persistent intraocular pressure (IOP) of 5 mmHg or less for 6 months in the follow-up. RESULTS: Among this 142 patients, hypotony occurred in 16 (11.3%) in 1 year postoperatively. The rate of hypotony in the patients with traumatic retinal detachment was 18.9%, and 6.7% in the patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, the difference being statistically significant (chi(2) = 4.89, P < 0.05). The rate of hypotony in aphakia was 20.9%, and 7.0% for phakia, the difference being statistically significant (chi(2) = 5.67, P < 0.05). The rate of hypotony in the patients with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR)-C class was l.8%, and l5.1% in the patients with PVR-D class, the difference being statistically significant (chi(2) = 3.97, P < 0.05). The rate of post-operative hypotony in the patients with preoperative hypotony was 21.9%, and. 6.9% in the patients without preoperative hypotony, the difference being statistically significant (chi(2) = 5.16, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Intraocular hypotony is a complication of vitrectomy for complex retinal detachment. The risk factors for the post-operative hypotony include trauma, aphakia, preoperative hypotony and severe PVR.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the dynamic postburn change in macrophage function in burned mice within 120 hrs after injury, and to investigate the effects of astragalus and shenmai injections on the macrophage function and surrvival rate of burned mice. METHODS: The mice were divided into 13 groups according to postburn time and handling methods, i,e, normal control (A), burn control (B), normal mice with astragalus (NA), normal mice with shenmai (NS), burned mice with astragal (BA), burned mice with shenmai (BS) 2 postburn hour (2 PBH), 6 PBH, 12 PBH, 24 PBH, 48 PBH, 72 PBH, 120 PBH groups. The changes in the various macrophage functions at different postburn time points and after the use of astragalus and shenmai injections were determined by means of phagocytic and RT-PCR methods. RESULTS: (1) Within 120 PBHs, the phagocytic function of murine macrophages decreased evidently. The ACP activity decreased obviously. The expression of IL-15 mRNA fluctuated and that of TNF mRNA enhanced significantly. (2) Five days after the application of astragalus in dose of 2 500 mg . kg(-1) .d(-1), the phagocytic function of macrophages and ACP activity increased markedly (P < 0.01). The expressions of IL-15 and TNF mRNAs were not influenced. The survival rate of mice was not increased. (3) Five days after the application of shenmai injection in dose of 2.5 ml . kg(-1) . d(-1), the phagocytic function of macrophages and ACP activity increased significantly (P < 0.01), while the expression of IL-15 mRNA exhibited no change. But the expression of TNFalpha mRNA decreased obviously (P < 0.01). Moreover, the survival rate of burned mice was evidently raised (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Peritoneal administration of shenmai injection at early postburn stage could significantly improve the macrophage function of burned mice, and it increase the survival rate of mice.

[Effects of tetrandrine on the synthesis of collagen and scar-derived fibroblast DNA].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of tetrandrine on the synthesis of collagen and scar derived fibroblast DNA. METHODS: Scar-derived human fibroblasts were cultured in vitro. The changes in the levels of the synthesis of collagen and DNA of the fibroblasts were represented by the incorporation values of (3)H-TdR and (3)H-proline into the cells. Tetrandrine was added to the culture media of the cells, and its effects were studied. RESULTS: When the concentration of added tetrandrine increased from 5 mg/L to 80 mg/L, The (3)H-TdR values in scar-derived fibroblasts were 1162 plus minus 226 and 412 plus minus 82, respectively while that in control group was 1740 plus minus 165, showing an inhibition rate of 76.32%, and the difference (P < 0.01). In addition, the (3)H-proline incorporation values in the cells were 535 plus minus 141 and 341 plus minus 89, respectively, while that in control group was 1126 plus minus 193, with the inhibition rate of 69.71%, showing significant difference (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The synthesis of DNA and collagen in cultured scar-derived fibroblasts could be inhibited by tetrandrine in dose-dependent pattern. Tetrandrine might be a potential agent for the prevention and treatment of proliferative scars.

[Prospective double-blind randomized trial of cryoanalgesia: experimental and clinical study].

OBJECTIVE: To alleviate and prevent postthoracotomy severe chest pain. METHODS: In dogs, intercostal nerves were freezed at -50 degrees C at different times. Pathological changes and repair process of the nerves were observed while identifying the best freezing time that could be used clinically. Prospective double-blind randomized trial in 200 patients who had undergone thoracotomy was carried out from January 1996 to June, 2000. Cryoanalgesia(Cryo group) and control group consisted of 100 patients. Before closing chest, 4 routes of costal nerves (incision, above and below incision, and one for inserting drainage tube) were freezed for 1.5 minutes separately. Postoperative incision pain was recorded by VAS(visual analogue scales) including recording the dosage of narcotics, pulmonary function on 3, 7, 15, 30, 90 postoperative days. RESULTS: Pathological changes of the axons and myelin sheaths progressed along with freezing time from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, but recovered in about one month. As the best freezing time, 1.5-minute freezing provided effective analgesia and quick recovery. Clinical application showed strong analgesia effect. VAS score of the cryo-group and control group was 2.29, and 7.24 (P < 0.001) respectively. In the cryo-group, no pain (0 degree) was observed in 22 patients (22%), very slight pain (1-2 degrees) in 44(44%), slight pain (3-4 degrees) in 20 (20%), and moderate pain (5-6 degrees) in 8 (8%). The total effective rate (0-6 degrees) was 94%. Dosage of dolantin in the cryo- and control groups was 41.3 mg and 185 mg, respectively(P < 0.001). The changes of pulmonary function for the two groups were not significant. CONCLUSION: Freezing intercostal nerves during thoracotomy can effectively prevent postoperative chest pain. The pathological changes of nerves are reversible.

[A discussion on diagnosis and typing of viral hepatitis].

OBJECTIVE: To bring forward a suggestion about clinical diagnostic standard and clinical typing for chronic and severe hepatitis. METHODS: To make a comprehensive study on clinical features and pathology of 895 cases of severe and chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis after hepatitis based on the viral prevention and control plan laid down in 1995. RESULTS: The chronic hepatitis can still be divided into mild, moderate and severe types clinically, but the PTA should be changed for normol-71, 70-61, 60-51, the A/G value for normal, 1.5-1.3, 1.2-1.0 respectively. ALT, BIL, alpha-globulin are kept unchanged. The albumin value can be cut out from the reference indexes of clinical typing for chronic hepatitis. Acute severe hepatitis can be divided into early stage (taking edema as the main type) and late stage (taking necrosis as the main type); subacute severe hepatitis can be divided into ascite type, coma type and mixed type; if those lacking of coma and ascite with PTA about 60%. 50% can be treated as earlier stage. Subacute and chronic severe hepatitis still can be divided into early, middle and late stages. The disease course of subacute severe hepatitis may prolong to six months. Chronic severe hepatitis can be divided into type B (typical chronic hepatitis type) type C (liver cirrhosis type) and type c (acute liver failure type developed from chronic hepatitis and viral carriers). CONCLUSIONS: The original procedure of 1995 are feasible on the whole.

[The levels of angiotensin and aldosterone in gases of hyperthyroid Graves' disease with and without hypokalemic periodic paralysis].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationships between the changes of plasma angiotensin I (AT I). Angiotensin II (AT II). serum aldosterone (Ald) levels and hypokalemic periodic paralysis (THPP) complicating hyperthyroid Graves' disease. METHODS: The levels of serum potassium, TT3, TT4, FT3, FT4, Ald and the plasma AT I, AT II and 24 hours urine potassium output were determined in 73 cases of hyperthroid Graves' disease, of which 43 were complicated by THPP and the other 30 were grouped as NTHPP cases. RESULTS: The mean level of serum potassium in THPP group was significantly lower than that in NTHPP group (P = 0.000), and the mean level of 24 hours urine potassium output in THPP group was significantly higher than that in NTHPP group(P = 0.000); The mean levels of plasma AT II and serum Ald in THPP group in upright position were significantly higher than those in NTHPP group (P = 0.008 and 0.013, respectively). The mean levels of 24 hours urine potassium output, plasma AT II and serum Ald in upright position were negatively correlated to serum potassium in both groups. The level of serum Ald in upright position was positively correlated to the level of 24 hours urine potassium out-put. The mean levels of plasma AT I and AT II in supine position were positively correlated to serum T3, and the level of plasma AT II in upright position was positively correlated to serum FT3. CONCLUSION: The level of 24 hours urine potassium output rises in THPP patients; the high levels of AT and Ald may contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease.

[A comparative study about the influence of lanthanum, calcium, fluoride on plaque pH].

OBJECTIVE: The study is designed to compare the effects of Lanthanum (La), Calcium (Ca), Fluoride (F) on pH changes of plaque, and to discuss the anti-cariogenic mechanisms of Lanthanum in terms of metabolism. METHODS: Plaque pH values after sucrose solution (containing La3+, Ca2+, F-) rinse were measured contiguously using micro-touch method, and then the minimum pH, time of minimum pH, ranges of plaque pH (delta pH), and areas of the response curves below (AUC6.5) were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: No statistical difference was found in the above monitored parameters of 8 subjects. For the decreasing degree of plaque pH, the pH value in the control group fell down the most obvious, and the second was that in the Ca group. The pH value decreased the least in the F and La group, and there was no significant difference between the F and La group. The time of minimum pH was the same in each group. CONCLUSION: Ca, La, F can decrease the range of plaque pH drop after sucrose solution rinse. The degree of Ca was the weakest, and F and La were same. All the above evidences prove that La may inhibit the acidogenicity of plaque.

[Measurement of microvessel density in laryngeal carcinoma and its clinical significance].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the microvessel density (MVD) in laryngeal carcinoma and its clinical significance. METHOD: Thirty-eight tumor specimens were selected from laryngeal cancer patients from January, 1994 to March, 1996. Histological sections of the tumors were stained immunohistochemically for factor VIII. Using light microscopy, we counted microvessels per 400 x field in the most active areas of tumor angiogenesis. RESULT: 1. The tumor blood vessels, composed of only one layer of endothelium were mainly distributed heterogeneously in the interstitial tissue of laryngeal carcinoma with irregular lumen, poorly developed structure. 2. The MVD in the cancer tissues were statistically higher than that in peritumoral tissues (P < 0.01). 3. The MVD in the cancer tissues in group of patients with metastasis to cervical lymphonodes were statistically higher than in group without metastasis (P < 0.01), the MVD in the cancer tissues in group of advanced cases (III, IV stages) were statistically higher than that in group of early cases (I, II stages, P < 0.01). 4. There was no statistically difference in MVD in the cancer tissue between supraglottic and glottic laryngeal carcinoma patients (P > 0.05). 5. There was no statistically difference in MVD in the cancer tissue among the G1, G2 and G3 group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The laryngeal cancer blood vessels have some characteristics that don't appear in normal vessels. It is suggested that tumor angiogenesis can promote tumor growth and metastasis and MVD may be a new prognostic indicator of laryngeal carcinoma.

[Inhibition effect of soybean isoflavones on the oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein].

In order to investigate the effect of soybean isoflavones(SI) on the oxidative modification to low-density lipoprotein(LDL) and to differentiate the effect of SI and alpha-tocopherol, in vitro and in vivo test were conducted. An in vitro model of LDL oxidative modification induced by copper-ion was established by monitoring the production of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and conjugated dienes after SI or alpha-tocopherol was added. The in vivo test was conducted by feeding rats with a high fat diet supplemented with SI and measured the sensitivity of LDL oxidative modification mediated by Cu2+ in vitro. The results revealed that when SI was added into the in vitro LDL oxidation system, the content of TBARS or conjugated dienes in the system was much reduced with a dose-effect relationship, whether lipid oxidation being initiated or not by copper-ion at 37 degrees C. In comparison with SI, only a significant inhibiting effect on lipid oxidation while alpha-tocopherol was added before the initiation of oxidation. High fat diet induced a rising of LDL sensitivity of oxidative stress, and adding SI to the high fat diet could counteract the sensitivity of LDL oxidative modification significantly. It is concluded that SI is a valuable natural antioxidant different from alpha-tocopherol in inhibiting LDL oxidative modification both in vitro and inv vivo.

[Study on inhibitory effect of ampelopsin on melanoma by serologic pharmacological method].

OBJECTIVE: To study the inhibitory effect of ampelopsin on melanoma. METHODS: Using a serologic pharmacological method, the inhibitory effects of different dose of ampelopsin on B16 melanoma cells were evaluated by a MTT assay and a flow cytometry. RESULTS: The serums of C57BL/6 mices, which were administered by 0.420 mmol/kg dose and 0.560 mmol/kg dose of ampelopsin, could obviously suppress the B16 melanoma cells, and the inhibitory rate was equal to that of the vacant serum adding same consistency ampelopsin. The drug serums of the two doses groups reduced the cleavage and proliferation index of B16 melanoma cells to 19.1% and 21.7% respectively. CONCLUSION: Ampelopsin possibly acts on melanoma B16 cells by original form drug at the period with a peak of the drug concentration, and inhibits the DNA synthesis of B16 cells.

[Surgical management of subglottic carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the surgical management and evaluate the effect on patients with subglottic cancer. METHODS: Fourteen cases with subglottic carcinoma were treated surgically from 1989 to 1998. There were T1-2N0 lesions in 5 cases, T3N0-2 lesions in 3 cases and T4N0-1 lesions in 6 cases. Eleven cases underwent partial laryngectomy and three cases underwent total laryngectomy. The defects of larynx were reconstructed by using uni-pedicled or bi-pedicled stemohyoid myofascial flap, platysma myocutaneous flap, sternocleidomastoid myoperiosteal flap, thyroid perichondral flap and epiglottis flap accordingly. Unilateral neck dissection was performed on 4 cases and bilateral on one. RESULTS: The function of phonation had been restored in all cases except in 3 patients who underwent total laryngectomy. Seven out eleven(63.6%) were decannulated. The swallowing function was restored in all patients. In all cases the 3 and 5 year survival rates were 78.6%(11/14) and 63.6% (7/11), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The conservative surgery can be used for the majority of the subglottic carcinoma if the lesions were entirely resected. The proficiency in surgical methods is crucial for the preservation of laryngeal function.

[Clinical study of juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical behavior of juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis in order to find some factors correlated to the development of this disease, and to sum up the significance and experience of CO2 laser surgery. METHOD: Sixty patients with juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis from September 1995 to December 1998 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The age of onset in 50 cases (83.3%) was below 4 years, and the peak-age was 2 years. The rates of recurrence were 72.0% and 45.7% (chi 2 = 4.71, P < 0.05) below and over 2 years, respectively. The rates of aggressive disease were 88.0% and 54.3% (chi 2 = 7.66, P < 0.01) below and over 2 years, respectively. The predominant sites of the disease were the vocal cords, the false vocal cords, the laryngeal ventricle, the laryngeal surface of the epiglottis and the subglottic region. Tracheostomy induced the development of tracheal papilloma, therefore should be avoided as possible. Laryngeal papilloma might be divided into four types on the basis of the growth manner and surface form corresponding to clinical behaviors. Five patients were followed-up for 1.5 years without recurrence, 18 patients had fewer recurrences following treatment, 33 patients were under treatment, and 3 patients died. Nineteen patients lost follow-up. The major complications included laryngeal and tracheal stenosis. CONCLUSION: Clinical behaviors of juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis were relevant to the age, growth form and tracheotomy. CO2 laser was an ideal instrument for ablation of the laryngeal papillomas with the following advantages: simple management, less bleeding, preservation of laryngeal structure and avoidance of tracheostomy.

Identification of glucose transporter-1 and it's functional assay in mouse glomerular mesangial cells cultured in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of glucose transporter-1 (GLUT1) in the glucose uptake of glomerular mesangial cells. METHODS: Cultured C57/SJL mouse mesangial cells were used in the study. The expression of GLUT1 mRNA was detected by RT-PCR. The expression of GLUT1 protein was detected by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. The uptake of glucose and its kinetics were determined by 2-deoxy-[3H] -D-glucose uptake. RESULTS: Both GLUT1 mRNA and protein were found in mouse glomerular mesangial cells. 2-deoxy-D-glucose uptake and kinetics assay showed that this glucose transporter had high affinity for glucose and the glucose uptake specificity was further confirmed by phloretin. CONCLUSION: Functional GLUT1 did present in mouse mesangial cells cultured in vitro and it might be the predominant transporter mediated the uptake of glucose into mesangial cells.
