The cranial capacity of Olduvai Hominid 7 is estimated to be 690 cc, with a standard uncertainty range of 538 to 868 cc. The estimate is derived from a systematic consideration of the relationships between Bregma-Asterion chords and cranial capacities obtained from a large sample of Homo sapiens and Pan troglodytes and from available fossil hominids. The estimation technique is applicable to other characters and specimens.
The proliferation of bone marrow (BM)-derived fibroblasts and granulocyte-macrophage progenitors (GM-CFC) was studied in culture in 23 patients with acute leukemia (AL). The number of GM-CFC colonies was significantly lower in patients with infiltrated BM when compared to those in remission: 17 +/- 12 vs. 125 +/- 35 colonies per 2 X 10(5) cells (p less than 0.005). The proliferation of fibroblasts derived from leukemic BM was significantly more active in acute nonlymphocytic (ANLL) than in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL): 6.8 +/- 3.2 X 10(5) vs. 2.8 +/- 1.8 X 10(5) fibroblasts per flask (p less than 0.05). The reduced GM-CFC colony formation correlated significantly (r = 0.84; p less than 0.02) with the reduced fibroblast proliferation in patients with ALL but not in those with ANLL. Supernatants from fibroblast monolayers stimulated additionally normal GM-CFC cultured in the presence of a potent conditioned medium as the source of colony stimulating activity. Fibroblast supernatants derived from BM with leukemic infiltrates, stimulated the incorporation of 3H-thymidine by monolayers of normal bone marrow fibroblasts but had no effect on ANLL fibroblasts.

The German Thorotrast Study includes 5159 Thorotrast patients and 5160 control patients. 887 Thorotrast patients and 660 control patients could be clinically and biophysically examined and followed-up. The mean age at injection or hospitalization in the case of the control group was 28 yr. The mean injected volume of Thorotrast was calculated to be 24.7 ml and the X-ray films of 249 Thorotrast patients showed paravascular deposits. In the meantime 432 Thorotrast patients and 122 patients of the control group have died. Among the deceased patients we have registered (Thorotrast vs control): hepatic tumors 152/0; myeloproliferative diseases 10/0; Hodgkin's diseases 2/0; non-Hodgkin's lymphomas 5/1; bronchogenic carcinomas 13/6; pleural mesothelioma 1/0; bone sarcoma 1/1(?); sarcoma at injection site 1/0; hepatic cirrhosis 90/6; bone marrow failure 8/1; other neoplastic diseases 46/19; other non-neoplastic diseases 151/88. The cumulative incidence of liver tumors depends on the dose rate to liver tissue and is not influenced by the age at injection. A dose effect relationship for the myeloproliferative diseases is not yet apparent.

The incidence of cancer among the Jewish members of 43 collective settlements (kibbutzim) in the Beisan and Jezreel Valleys is reviewed. These settlements, apart from their geographical distribution, may be taken as a representative sample of the kibbutzim throughout Israel. This review covers the period 1960-72, during which 415 malignant tumors were diagnosed in a population experiencing 253,232 person-years of risk. The incidence was compared with that of the Jewish population in Israel as a whole, and the result was used as an approximation of the country's urban/kibbutz ratio. Cancers of the lip, malignant melanomas and cancer of the female breast were more common in the kibbutz population. Malignancies of the respiratory tract were less common among males living on kibbutzim than in the total Jewish male population of Israel. These differences are probably related to social and environmental factors.

Actin from rabbit skeletal muscle has been modified with the fluorescent label N-iodoacetyl-N'-(5-sulfo-1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine (1,5-I-AEDANS). Under conditions where the actin is in the unpolymerized form (G-actin), the addition of Mg2+ or KCl results in enhancement of the fluorescence. Titration of the labeled G-actin with Mg2+ at varying concentrations of CaCl2 gives, by extrapolation, a value for the dissociation constant for Mg2+ of 35 microM in the absence of Ca2+ and a calculated value of 10 microM for Ca2+ in the absence of Mg2+. The two metal ions compete with each other. The fluorescence enhancement induced by Mg2+ is reversed by the addition of Ca2+ and both processes are time-dependent, indicating a reversible conformational change of G-actin as a consequence of addition of divalent metal. KCl also enhances the fluorescence of the labeled G-actin but does not appear to compete with the divalent metal ion. The enhancement of the fluorescence is very rapid and any conformational change induced by KCl is probably different from that induced by divalent metal ions. Finally, it is shown that loss of fluorescence of the labeled G-actin may be associated with inactivation of the actin.
