Schizophrenic delusions among Koreans, Korean-Chinese and Chinese: a transcultural study.

In this transcultural study of schizophrenic delusions among Koreans, Korean-Chinese and Chinese, many delusions were shown to be different among the three groups in their frequency and content and the differences could be explained by sociocultural and political factors. Delusional themes sensitive to influence by sociocultural or political situations and changes seem to be 'family', 'love affairs', 'religious matters', 'economic matters', 'specific physical damage' and 'political themes.' Delusions about 'family', 'love affair', 'being raped', 'religious matters' and 'economic and business matters' were most frequent in Koreans. Delusions of 'blood-relatedness', 'longevity' and 'political themes' were most frequent in Korean-Chinese. Delusions of 'bloodsucking and brain or viscera extracted' and 'poison or being pricked by poisoned needle' were most prominent in Chinese.

Treatment of 121 patients with malignant effusion due to advanced lung cancer by intrapleural transfer of autologous or allogeneic LAK cells combined with rIL-2.

Lymphocytes isolated from malignant pleural effusion in patients with advanced lung cancer or from allogeneic peripheral blood of healthy donors were induced to become LAK cells after in vitro culture with rIL-2. One hundred and twenty-one patients with malignant effusions were treated by intrapleural transfer of autologous or allogeneic LAK cells combined with rIL-2. The effusion disappeared in 71 patients (58.6%) and was significantly decreased in 45 patients (36.2%). Five patients did not respond to treatment. Tumor cells in pleural effusions disappeared or were significantly decreased in number, whereas the lymphocytes were significantly increased in number in all responders. Except for transient fever in 10 patients, no serious side effect was observed.

Decrease in biliary excretion of copper in Long-Evans cinnamon (LEC) rats causing spontaneous hepatitis due to a gross accumulation of hepatic copper.

The concentration of biliary Cu was 0.12 +/- 0.01 microgram/ml in male LEC rats aged 14 weeks and 0.43 +/- 0.09 micrograms/ml in Fischer rats of the same age. When copper chloride (170 micrograms/kg b.w. as Cu) was infused intravenously (i.v.), the concentration of biliary Cu increased to only 0.21 +/- 0.06 microgram/ml 30 min after the infusion in LEC rats. In contrast, Fischer rats showed a concentration about 10 times higher (4.02 +/- 2.2 micrograms/ml) than that before the infusion. In Fischer rats pretreated with cadmium chloride, the biliary Cu concentration was 1.04 + 0.43 micrograms/ml 30 min after infusion of copper. Horseradish peroxidase (E.C.1.11.1.7) infused iv along with copper chloride was excreted into bile at a low level in LEC rats compared to Fischer rats. Our results suggest that the gross accumulation of hepatic Cu in the new, mutant LEC rats is due to a low excretion of Cu into bile and that the hepatobiliary dysfunction is related to spontaneous hepatitis.

[Pharmacokinetics of epostane in rats].

After rats were given (ig) epostane 50, 100 and 200 mg.kg-1, plasma concentrations of epostane were determined by HPLC. According to concentration versus time data, the pharmacokinetic model of epostane in all rats followed a pattern of one-compartment model. The pharmacokinetic parameters of the three doses were found to be as follows: Ka were 0.578 h-1, 0.553 h-1 and 0.439 h-1; K were 0.308 h-1, 0.282 h-1 and 0.224 h-1; T1/2 were 2.27 h, 2.54 h, 3.12 h and AUC were 786.89 micrograms.h.ml-1, 1644.43 micrograms.h.ml-1, and 3335.35 micrograms.h-1.ml-1 respectively. The tissue distribution of epostane in rats were as follows: highest in adrenal, liver, gastrointestinal tract, uterus and ovary; next in kidney, heart, brain, lung and spleen. The peak concentration times were about 3 h and comparable to plasma peak time. Plasma protein binding of epostane was determined by equilibrant dialysis of the plasma of rats given the drug and found that the degree of binding was not correlated with drug dosage under our experimental conditions. Little epostane was found in the bile, urine and feces. It appears that epostane might have undergone extensive biotransformation in the rat body.

Regulation of human liver cytochromes P-450 in family 3A in primary and continuous culture of human hepatocytes.

The cytochrome P-450 3A gene family comprises the dominant forms of cytochrome P-450 found in human liver. We examined as a possible useful system for studying the regulation of cytochrome P-450 3A under controlled conditions in vitro, primary monolayer cultures of human hepatocytes and compared the results with those obtained from the study of cytochrome P-450 3A in the human hepatoblastoma cell line HepG2 or in the human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line TONG/HCC. Using 3A antibodies, 3A cDNAs and 3A3, 3A4, 3A5 and 3A7 isozyme-specific oligonucleotides as probes, we determined that primary human hepatocyte cultures routinely expressed a 3A3/4* immunoreactive protein and 3A mRNA. These gene products were well maintained for many days and were induced by treatment of the cultures with dexamethasone, phenobarbital, macrolide antibiotics, the HMG CoA reductase inhibitor lovastatin or an antifungal agent, clotrimazole. Of six donor livers examined, only two contained mRNA or protein for 3A5, a form found in only a few adult human subjects. In cultures prepared from one of these two livers, 3A5 mRNA was detectable for several days. In cultures of hepatocytes from the remaining four human livers that did not contain 3A5 mRNA or protein, we detected neither spontaneous nor inducible 3A5 proteins or mRNAs. HepG2 cells contained only 3A7 protein, a form found in human fetal liver, even after treatment with inducers. treatment of HepG2 cells with dexamethasone, macrolide antibiotics, phenobarbital and phenobarbital-like inducers or lovastatin produced dose-dependent induction of 3A7 mRNA and 3A7 immunoreactive protein. TONG/HCC cells contained 3A3, 3A4 and 3A5 mRNAs, but only 3A5 immunoreactive protein could be detected.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

I-compounds--endogenous DNA markers of nutritional status, ageing, tumour promotion and carcinogenesis.

Certain bulky DNA modifications increase with age in laboratory animals without known exposure to carcinogens and are known as indigenous or I-compounds. Most of the spots detected on TLC maps by the nuclease P1-enhanced bisphosphate version or the monophosphate version of the 32P-postlabelling assay fit this definition of I-compounds. Chromatographic profiles and levels of these nucleotides greatly depend on animal species, strain, tissue and gender, but are also influenced by the diet and by chemical exposures. Thus, both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the formation of I-compounds. It appears that they are derived from endogenous DNA-reactive compounds generated during normal nutrient metabolism and that regulatory mechanisms exist which control their levels in tissue DNA.

Nude mouse interim host model for human parathyroid grafts. Part IV. Human PTG xenograft rejection in a mouse B lymphocyte system.

An interim host model for human parathyroid gland (PTG) grafts has been established. In this experiment, the proliferation of mouse blood vessels and infiltration of mouse B lymphocytes into human PTG grafts were successively observed. The results showed that within 10 d of interim hosting, when PTG grafts were still nourished by permeable factors, scattered mouse B lymphocyte infiltration was already apparent. As time went by, B lymphocyte infiltration and IgG secretion became more obvious. At 60-90 d interim hosting, an intact human-mouse tissue "chimera" was formed. Thereafter, human PTG grafts were gradually fragmented and absorbed. The theoretical significance and clinical value of this rejection phenomenon are discussed.

[Research on aluminium content of the diet in haerbin and daily aluminium intake of the local people].

The three sources of dietary aluminium were investigated. IPC was used for measuring aluminium content of individual foods. It was found that aluminium level in natural foods is generally less than 1 ppm, rarely exceeds 10 ppm. Some foods may contain up to 10-30 ppm aluminium during processing and handling. The concentration of aluminium in tape water was usually less than 0.05 ppm. The richest natural sources of aluminium are tea leaves, Chinese prickly ash and mustard. The aluminium content of tea leaves ranges from 300 to 1800 ppm and about 16-20% of the aluminium is extracted from the leaves. Foods made with aluminium-containing food additives contain extremely high level of aluminium. In most cases, the amount of aluminium leaching from aluminium utensils is very small or undetectable except when foods with low pH such as tomatoes are heated in aluminium utensils. Generally 4-15 mg, seldom up to 20 mg aluminium is taken daily from diet by Chinese people. Some people may consume more than 100mg aluminium from diet due to intake of foods made with aluminium-containing food additives.

p53 gene mutations in Chinese human testicular seminoma.

Genomic deoxyribonucleic acid from 17 primary human testicular seminomas was screened for the presence of mutations in exons 5 to 8 of gene p53, using the single strand conformation polymorphism assay, followed by direct deoxyribonucleic acid sequencing. The p53 mutations in 1 allele leading to an amino acid change but a normal (wild-type) sequence in the remaining allele were identified in 4 of 17 seminomas (23.5%). Sites of mutations were in exon 5 (codon 141), exon 7 (codon 238, codon 258) and exon 8 (codon 270). The present study suggested that mutation of the p53 gene is involved in the development of human testicular seminoma as in the case of several other types of human cancers.

[Immune-efficacy of recombinant vaccinia HB vaccine on middle school students of Uigur nationality].

Immunization efficacy of HB vaccine which is gene engineering vaccine of vaccinia virus recombinant was studied. A total of 206 middle school students of Uygur nationality in Hami, Xinjiang was vaccinated. A varying dosage of 10 micrograms, 5 micrograms, and 2.5 micrograms and 0, 1, 2 months schedule was carried out. The results showed that a seroconversion rate of 100%, 92.4% and 83.5%, in respect to 10 micrograms, 5 micrograms and 2.5 micrograms dosages were found while the mIU/ml values were 129.25, 132.27 and 121.18 respectively. The difference between seroconversion rates of 10 micrograms and 2.5 micrograms was significant (P < 0.05), whereas, that between conversion rate due to 10 micrograms and 5 micrograms was not (P > 0.05). Results in a year after primary immunization showed seroconversion rates of the three groups being 97.10%, 89.80% and 76.00% (P < 0.05); mIU/ml value were 151.0, 95.2 and 71.6 (P < 0.01), showing that the 10 micrograms group gave superior results to the 5 micrograms and 2.5 micrograms groups.

Clinical studies on the mechanism for acupuncture stimulation of ovulation.

Ovulatory dysfunction is commonly seen in gynecology clinic. It may cause infertility, amenia, functional uterine bleeding and a variety of complications. This research according to TCM theory records treating with acupuncture 34 patients suffering from ovulatory dysfunction. Changes in clinical symptoms and some relative targets are reported, plus findings in animal experiments. The effect of acupuncture in improving ovulation and the rationale are discussed. According to TCM theory concerning the generative and physiologic axis of women, this research involved the following points: Ganshu (UB 18), Shenshu (UB 23), Guanyuan (Ren 4), Zhongji (Ren 3), and Sanyinjiao (Sp 6). The reinforcement and reduction of acupuncture enables it to strengthen liver and kidney. Through the Chong and Ren channels it nourishes uterus to adjust the patient's axis function and recover ovulation. Treated on an average of 30 times, the patients' symptoms improved to varying degrees. The marked effective rate was 35.29%, the total effective rate being 82.35%. BBT, VS, CMS, and B ultrasonic picture all improved to some degree. The results also showed that acupuncture may adjust FSH, LH, and E2 in two directions and raise the progesterone level, bringing them to normal. The animal experiments confirmed this result. Results showed that acupuncture may adjust endocrine function of the generative and physiologic axis of women, thus stimulating ovulation. The results of this research will provide some scientific basis for treating and further studying this disorder.

Applications of the improved computerized analysis of 2D INADEQUATE spectra.

This paper illustrates the use of the program CCBond to determine the carbon skeletons of bioorganic molecules in low concentration samples. Discussed is the structure elucidation of bistramide A, a compound extracted from a Fijian Lissoclinum sp. and cholesterol in 71- and 20-mumol samples, respectively. The detection limit of the automated bond extraction is shown to be dramatically improved compared to the manual interpretation of 2D INADEQUATE spectra.
