[The mechanism of hemorrhage following phosphorus burns and the effect of calcium gluconate].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of hemorrhagic tendency after phosphorus poisoning. METHODS: 45% phosphoric acid and 20 mg/cm2 phosphorus were used to produce burn injury in rabbits. The total content of phosphorus remaining on the wound and 7-day mortality were similar in both groups. RESULTS: The results showed that plasma free calcium contents were significantly lower in both phosphorus groups than healthy and thermal burn controls (0.80 vs 1.40 mol/l, P < 0.01). The free calcium content of platelet was lowered to 116-140 nmol/l, which was significantly lower than that of healthy control (285 nmol/l) and thermal injury group (480-504 nmol/l). Concomitantly, the platelet aggregation rate was lowered to 1.29% and 10.78% in phosphoric acid group and phosphorus group, respectively, while it was 67.01% in healthy control and 82.1%-84.9% in thermal injury group; the difference was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Calcium therapy brought back intracellular and extracellular free calcium contents to normal in phosphorus burn group. Also platelet aggregation rate approached normal level after calcium therapy. The results suggest that the bleeding tendency after phosphorus burn is due to combination of phosphorus with intracellular and extracellular calcium of platelets, thus inhibiting aggregation of platelets.

[Changes of blood supply from portal system after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization in huge hepatocellular carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: Blood supply changes of the portal venous system to the tumor mass before and after transcatheterarterial chemoembolization(TACE) in a series of 22 patients with huge hepatocellular carcinoma were monitored to study the necessity of intervention via portal vein. METHODS: Twenty-two selected patients with huge hepatocellular carcinoma were enrolled in the study. Elscint double helical CT was used to scan liver during the maximum concentration of contrast medium in portal venous system. CT Angiography and MIP(Maximum Intensity Projection) were used to image formation of the portal venous system. RESULTS: The technique of scan and image formation were excellent to evaluate the attribution of portal venous blood supply to HCC. The portal venous blood supply was mainly the tumor periphery distribution (P < 0.01). After treatment of TACE, the portal venous blood supply to tumor periphery increased significantly (P < 0.05), and some did appear signs of enriched blood supply around the tumor. Negative correlation between the degree of reduction in tumor and portal venous blood supply to the tumor periphery before TACE was evident. CONCLUSION: The attribution of portal venous blood supply to HCC was in the tumor periphery, and regression of tumor after TACE was affected by portal venous blood supply to the tumor, thus it is reasonable to suggest interventional therapy via portal vein.

[Infection of sexually transmitted diseases in female patients with inflammation of genitourinary tract by polymerase chain reaction].

Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) from 5899 female out-patients with inflammation of genitourinary tract was detected. Among 18.57% positive cases, the effective rates of the gonorrhea (26.07%) and urethritis (23.73%) were higher than those of the Condyloma acuminatum (CA) (17.73%), vaginitis (17.70%), and cervicitis (11.54%)(P< 0.01), indicating that there were various degrees of NG infection in genitourinary tract diseases. Moreover, Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), NG, and human papilloma viruses (HPV) were also detected in 8329 patients with vaginitis. Among 20.01% positive cases, the positive rate of UU was 39.95%, CT 21.36%, NG 17.70%, and HPV 16.40%. Variance analysis showed that significant differences existed in the vaginitis caused by different pathogens ( P <0.01); namely, four kinds of pathogens were present in the patients with vaginitis.

[Reversal of cancer multidrug resistance by Chinese medicine Ams-11, Fw-13 and Tul-17].

The aim of this project was to find some kinds of Chinese materia medica as effective agents for in vitro reversal of cancer multidrug resistance. Based on the present authors' previous researches, thirty-two kinds of Chinese medicine as research meterials were selected and examined. Using cell growth inhibit assay, the authors found that three of them--Ams-11, Fw-13 and Tul-17 in the doses free from cytotoxity could enhance the sensitivity of multidrug resistant cells to anti-cancer drugs in a dose-dependent way. It seemed that these three kinds of Chinese medicine might be potential effective reversal agents.

[Study on the health of cotton mill workers].

A group of 110 workers in a cotton mill was investigated by questionnaire, skin testing, and the measurement of airway responsiveness through forced expiratory volume for one second(FEV1) by spirometry. The workers were examined before starting work, 10 weeks and one year after exposure. Decreases in FEV1 over shifts were small at 10 weeks and one year, and were slightly higher among people with positive skin reactions to cotton dust extracts. Airway responsiveness, defined as the average decrease in FEV1 after 1.25 mg methacholin, was increased at 10 weeks. It remained about the same after one year, except in the workers with positive skin test. Subjective symptoms of chest tightness and cough with phlegm increased progressively at 10 weeks and one year. Nasal irritation remained unchanged and dry cough decreased in one year. The results suggest that the airway inflammation caused by cotton dust increases with the exposure time and that the changes are more notable in workers with reactivity to cotton dust extract.

[Comparative study of the third party and paternal leukocyte immunization in recurrent spontaneous abortion of lowered maternal-fetal immuno-recognition].

OBJECTIVE: To compare curative effect of leukocyte immunization to recurrent spontaneous aborters(RSA) with lowered maternal-fetal immuno-recognition between transfusions of the third party leukocyte-rich erythrocyte concentrates and injections of paternal leukocytes. METHODS: Forty RSA patients with lack of blocking antibodies were randomly divided into two groups. Blocking antibodies were analysed by one-way mixed lymphocyte reaction blocking test and complement-dependent cytotoxic test, anti-idiotypic antibodies to blocking antibodies by one-way mixed lymphocyte reaction blocking inhibiting test, and flow cytometry evaluation of blocking antibodies were used to investigate effect of blocking antibodies on the CD antigens of T cells. The immunization was achieved by transfusions of the third party leukocytes or injections of the paternal leukocytes for 3 times or more at an interval of 4 weeks. RESULTS: It was found in dynamical analyses that levels of the blocking antibodies and their anti-idiotypic antibodies increased significantly after the aborters had been immunized. The successful pregnancy rate was 86.2% following immunization, and body weight of the infants was 3,300 +/- 116 g(x +/- s), with no significant difference to 3,279.0 +/- 113.8 g of the infants from normal pregnancy. According to dynamics of blocking antibodies and their anti-idiotypic antibodies, the paternal leukocyte immunotherapy appeared superior to the third party one, but the successful pregnancy rate and the body weight of infants were with not different between the two immunotherapy groups. CONCLUSION: The third party and paternal leukocyte immunization could effectively stimulate the aborters of lowered maternal-fetal immuno-recognition to produce blocking antibodies and their anti-idiotypic antibodies, leading to successful pregnancy. The immunotherapy does not apparently influence the body weight of the delivered infants.

[Detection of intrauterine fetal growth of twins].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how to detect intrauterine fetal growth of twins with height of uterine fundus. METHODS: This study was a randomized coupling trial. 75-couples of twins and single gestation were involved. Linear regression analysis was made after correcting the uterine height of single gestation. RESULTS: If each of twins develops as the same as single gestation, the relationship in uterine height between twins and single gestation can be described as a correlation equation: y = 1.26x + 1.3 (R2 = 0.656, r = 0.81, P < 0.001). The regression coefficient is 1.26, which is very closed to 3 square root of 2. According to the correlation equation, we made a table to forecast the uterine height of twins and single gestation in different gestational age. CONCLUSION: The ralationship in the uterine height between twins and single gestation can be used to predict intrauterine fetal growth of twins.

[The relationship between hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatitis C virus infection in Guangxi, China].

OBJECTIVE: To study the significance of HCV infection as a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Guangxi. METHODS: Monoclonal antibodies against the core, NS3 and NS4 region of HCV, and anti-HBsAg antibody were used for immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: The frequency of HCV infection from regions with high, intermediate and low prevalence of HCC was 24/63(38.1%), 23/62 (37.1%) and 30/77(39.0%), respectively, while that of HBsAg was 84.1%, 83.8% and 84.4%, respectively. The overall positive rate of HCV infection was 77/202 (38.1%), and of HBV infection was 170/202 (84.2%). CONCLUSION: While HBV infection frequently accompanies HCC, HCV infection is present in more than 1/3 of HCC. This is generally the case regardless of geographical difference in HCC prevalence.

[Immuno-epidemiological investigation of recurrent spontaneous abortion].

OBJECTIVE: To probe into immune pathogeny of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). METHODS: Immunological analysis was made in ABO group antibodies by indirect hemagglutination, anti-zona pellucida antibodies by BA-ELISA, anti-phospholipid antibodies by ELISA, blocking effect (MLR-BE) by blocking test one-way mixed lymphocyte reaction, cytotoxic index (CI) by complement-dependent cytotoxic test, anti-idiotypic antibodies to blocking antibodies by MLR-BE inhibiting test, and effects of blocking antibodies on CD antigens by flow cytometry. In contrast to the healthy fertile women, 129 cases of primary abortion and 16 cases of secondary abortion were retrospectively analyzed for immunoetiological compositions. RESULTS: Among causes of RSA, lack of blocking antibodies accounted for 31.7%, anti-zona pellucida antibodies for 20.4%, anti-phospholipid antibodies for 12.5%, and ABO group antibodies for 11.5%. Among causes of primary abortion, lack of blocking antibodies accounted for 31.4%, anti-zona pellucida antibodies for 20.4%, anti-phospholipid antibodies for 8.5%, and ABO group antibodies for 8.4%. Among causes of secondary abortion, imbalance of idiotypic-antiidiotypic network of blocking antibody accounted for 39.4%, anti-phospholipid antibodies for 31.4%, and ABO group antibodies for 22.4%. CONCLUSION: According to the above evaluation of immuno-epidemiology of RSA, RSA may be etiologically classified into lack of materno-fetal immuno-recognition, materno-fetal inappropriate immuno-recognition, and disorder of materno-fetal immuno-recognition.

[Antifertile effect of immunization with anti-idiotypic antibodies to porcine zona pellucida].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the antifertile effect of anti-idiotypic antibodies to PZP. METHODS: The New Zealand rabbits were immunized by 17D3 monoclonal antibody against PZP to produce anti-idiotypic antibodies (Ab2) which were then purified by immuno-affinity chromatography. RESULTS: The mice immunized with Ab2 showed decrease of pregnancy rate and a statistically significant reduction in the number of embryos as compared to controls (P < 0.05). Histological examination of ovaries showed that Ab2 interferes only with late follicular development. CONCLUSIONS: Ab2 to 17D3mAb could alleviate ovarian damage and suppress partial fertility. Clearly, further research is required to screen epitope of inner image of Ab2 and to express it by gene engineering.

[Determination of vincristini sulfas in tumor cells by high performance liquid chromatography].

Vincristini sulfas (VCR) is an important common antitumor drug. The resistance to anticancer drug is the main cause of the chemotherapy failure. To screen the drugs which can reverse VCR resistance for VCR resistant cell strain, an analytical method has been established for the determination of VCR concentration in tumor cells using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The stainless steel column was 25 cm x 4.6 mm i.d. packed with totally porous, spherical silica particles (5 microns). A solution of methanol and 0.02 mol/L dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (80:20, V/V) adjusted to pH 6.6 with H3PO4 was employed as the mobile phase. The flow rate was 1 mL/min. Chromatography was performed with ultraviolet detector at 267 nm. The method is simple, rapid and selective. Linear calibration curve for VCR was measured within the range of 10 to 200 mg/L with correlation coefficient of 0.999 8. The lowest detection limit was 4 mg/L tumor cells extract. The HPLC method described is suitable for clinical monitoring and pharmacokinetic study of VGR.

[Alanyl-glutamine dipeptides protected the liver function by increasing the hepatic glutathione].

OBJECTIVE: Glutathione (GSH) is a major antioxidant which protects hepatic tissues from free radical injury. Alanyl-Glutamine (ALA-GLN) proved to be a precursor of GSH synthesis, was used to investigate the relationship to GSH biosynthesis which may be effective for hepatic protection. METHODS: 20 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups receiving standard parenteral nutrition (STD) supplemented with or without ALA-GLN for 7 days. At 5th day 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was injected peritoneally, the blood samples for GSH, GSSG, ALT (sGPT), AKP and TBilli tests were measured after 4-8 h. RESULTS: The concentration measurements were significantly different in ALA-GLN group compared with STD animals in serum GLN (687.3 +/- 49.8) vs (504.9 +/- 38.6) mumol/L, P < 0.05), serum GSH (14.37 +/- 5.16) vs (7.08 +/- 3.16) mumol/L, P < 0.01) and in liver GSH content (6.86 +/- 2.46) vs (4.38 +/- 1.63) mumol/g liver tissue, P < 0.05). Rats in ALA-GLN group have lesser elevations in hepatic enzymes after 5-FU administration. CONCLUSIONS: The supplemented nutrition ALA-GLN protected the liver function through increasing the glutathione biosynthesis and preserving the glutathione stores of hepatic tissue.
