The relationship between war and homicide rates.

A time-series study from 1933 to 1986 in the USA showed that the nation's military participation rate was concurrently associated with lower homicide rates among nonwhite but not white individuals.

The relationship between divorce, unemployment and female participation in the labour force and suicide rates in Australia and America.

Identical data sets for Australia and the USA from 1946 to 1984 were analysed to explore the association of unemployment rates, female participation in the labour force and divorce with suicide rates. While female participation in the labour force was related to suicide rates in Australia, unemployment was not. For the USA, both female participation in the labour force and unemployment were related to suicide rates.

Trends in the methods used for suicide in Northern Ireland.

As domestic gas was made less toxic in Northern Ireland during the period 1960-1988, it was used less often for suicide. During the same period, as car ownership increased, the use of car exhaust for suicide increased in popularity without there being a corresponding decrease in the use of other methods. Part of the temporal variation in suicide rates in Northern Ireland may be accounted for by the relative availability of lethal methods for suicide.

A study of different types of suicide notes.

A study of suicide notes in West Berlin revealed that those leaving instructions in their notes were younger, more often Catholic and having problems with work, loneliness and addiction. Those including wills and testaments were older, more likely to be female and widowed/divorced, and more likely to have recently experienced the death of a partner.
