In male teenagers, scores on a self-destructive inventory were more strongly associated with the presence of suicidal ideation than scores on a depression inventory. For female teenagers, scores on the depression inventory were more strongly associated with suicidal ideation.

The present study explored correlates of national suicide and homicide rates in a sample of industrialized nations. A large set of social variables was factor-analyzed and the factors were correlated with both suicide and homicide rates and with changes in these rates. Different social variables were found to correlate with rates of suicide than with rates of homicide, and different variables correlated with current rates of personal violence than with changes in these rates.
The circulation of firearm magazines was used as an index of gun ownership in the states of the USA. States with a higher per capita circulation of firearm magazines had higher suicide rates by gun and higher overall suicide rates. Homicide rates were unrelated to this measure of gun availability. Implications for the prevention of suicide are discussed.

Data from Japan from 1969 to 1982 indicated that, as domestic gas was detoxified, its use for suicide declined. In addition, there was no evidence that would-be suicides switched to alternative methods for suicide. The results were interpreted as support for a recent suggestion that preventing access to lethal methods for suicide may prevent suicide.
An examination of recent suicide and homicide rates in the United States and South Africa showed quite similar patterns, with whites having higher rates of suicide and nonwhites having higher rates of homicide. In recent years, suicide rates for white males have risen in South Africa while remaining stable in the United States. In contrast, homicide rates have risen for nonwhites in South Africa.
A study of the states of the United States showed that suicide rates using car exhaust were lower in states that had lower rates of car ownership, a greater proportion of the population living in non-urban areas and that were further north. The implications of these results for a public health approach to suicide prevention are discussed.
A study of 30 individuals who committed suicide whose biographies or autobiographies have been published revealed that 16 had experienced loss in childhood. There was an excess of loss caused by death and of fathers rather than mothers. Fourteen of the 16 losses occurred when the child was aged 6 to 14 (latency age).
Ecological correlates of suicide were explored for the counties of Hungary and the states of the United States. Only one common correlate was identified (divorce rates). The remaining social indicators that were associated with suicide rates in the United States were not associated with suicide rates in Hungary. The importance of replicating ecological studies in several countries was noted.
Restriction fragment length polymorphisms were investigated in five racial groups using the X chromosome probes DXS9 and DXS7. The allele frequencies of these polymorphisms showed significant differences and both DNA fragments were found to be highly polymorphic in the populations of south and southeast Asia. In the Marathi population of India, a rare allele B*3 (3 kilobases; kb) and an altered 7-kb fragment instead of the 6.6-kb constant band were found with DXS9. This is the first time that the rare B*3 allele is found in a non-European population.
