[Results of a randomized polychemotherapy study in malignant melanoma].

A polychemotherapy (DTIC, vincristine, ftorafur, hydroxycarbamide) devised with reference to the results of short-term sensitivity tests in cell culture is compared with single-agent chemotherapy with DTIC in malignant melanoma. Effectiveness was investigated in a randomized prospective study in cases of high-risk melanoma in clinical stage I, in clinical stage II after lymphadenectomy and in clinical stage III after tumour debulking. The results recorded allow no positive effects of either form of chemotherapy in stage I disease compared with surgical treatment only in a control group. In contrast, a statistically significant advantage of the polychemotherapy was noted in stage II compared with a control group. There was no significant difference in the results of treatment between the two forms of chemotherapy in stage III. No complete remissions of long duration have been achieved.

[Effect of structure of hapten carrying model substances on contact reaction: DNP conjugates of stereoisomers of alpha-alanine following DNCB sensitization].

By means of epicutaneous tests under standard conditions we studied the cell-mediated contact sensitivity to dinitrophenyl (DNP) conjugates of the stereoisomeric amino acids L-alpha-alanine and D-alpha-alanine, respectively, in patients sensitized with dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). There was no difference in the number of positive skin responses with the two enantiomeric compounds DNP-L-alpha-alanine (16/26) and DNP-D-alpha-alanine (17/26). However, as in earlier studies, no patient has shown a positive reaction to the position-isomeric DNP-beta-alanine.

[Life-threatening complications caused by Argas reflexus (Ixodoidea, Argasidae)].

Injuries to health by Argas reflexus (Ixodoidea, Argasidae) are known and have been published since about the middle of 19th century. Argas reflexus was on outsider in health pests for a long time, but biological and medical interests increased during last years. The greatest part of injuries by far, brought about by stings of this parasite, takes either a harmless course or there are appearances of middle severity, which can be easy controlled by a physician. In some cases however, at often happened exposition in the main, there may be complications dangerous for one's life, the causes of which often are not recognised sufficient by general practitioners. Beside a casuistry the article contains references to prompt measures--especially for the first-aid doctor-and following tasks for public hygienic executive organs.

Adult

[Contact eczema caused by pesticides in East Germany].

19 allergic, occupational contact eczemas and 1 irrative contact dermatitis caused by pesticides from 1985-86 in the GDR are described. The 20 casuistic reports are supplemented with data concerning age, sex, exposure time, patch-test results, occupation site and dermatological details. The following pesticides were determined: maneb, zineb, mancozeb, propineb, thiram, demephion, dimethoate, propachlor, metham-Na, benomyl, chloralhydrate with chloralmethylhalbacetal, carbaryl, dinocap captan, phenyl-Hg-acetate and trichlodinitrobenzene. Each individual case adhered to the recommended test concentration for skin tests. Contact eczemas brought about by the pesticides demephion and trichlordinitrobenzene have not yet to be described. Those working in gardening seem to be particularly prone.

Adult

[Model antigens and their significance for occupational dermatology].

By means of epicutaneous tests we studied the contact hypersensitivity to DNP-amino acids in individuals sensitized to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). We found a high incidence of positive skin responses to DNP-glycine, di-DNP-L-cystine, and DNP-L-alpha-alanine, but only in some cases DNP-beta-alanine induced skin reactivity. The results are discussed both in connection with the influence of varying molecular sizes and chemical structure on the immunological reactivity and the possibility to develop a beta-alanine containing protective ointment against protein-reactive haptens.

Antigens

[The quantitative immunochemical determination of Candida albicans-specific antibodies (author's transl)].

A diffusion method is described for quantitative determination of precipitating antibodies against polysaccharide antigen from Candida albicans. It is a reversed single radial immunodiffusion method with the antigen in the gel layer. As one parameter within an immunological testing programme antibody levels were estimated in serum samples from a patient suffering from malignant melanoma.

[Effect of the chemical structure of low molecular weight hapten carriers on immunoreactivity].

Patients with demonstrated contact dermatitis to DNCB (dinitrochlorobenzene) were patch-tested using various dinitrophenyl (DNP) derivatives. These investigations revealed the varying sensitivities to the structural isomers DNP-L-alpha-alanine (59% positive) and DNP-beta-alanine (4% positive). These results are discussed both in connection with various sensitivity rates to other DNP compounds and published findings from the literature concerning the influence of structural factors on immune reactivity.
