Ultrasound examination is now performed on about 30% of all pregnancies. Although it is used primarily to estimate gestational age, viability, presentation, and placental site, detailed fetal anatomy is also disclosed. Many abnormalities are now detected prenatally which may not be clinically apparent at birth, and raise new dilemmas of patient management. We describe a large mass documented by ultrasound in the right lobe of liver in a 29-week-old fetus. Subsequent postnatal investigation confirmed the initial ultrasound findings and documented spontaneous regression.
The computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound findings in 18 patients (35 kidneys) with non-Hodgkin lymphoma involving the kidneys are presented. Renal involvement was bilateral in 13 patients. The most common presentation was that of multiple intraparenchymal nodules (15 kidneys). Other types of involvement included direct invasion from contiguous retroperitoneal lymph node masses (nine kidneys), solitary renal masses (five kidneys), and diffuse infiltration (two kidneys). On CT most of the lesions were of homogeneous tissue density. Ultrasonographically the renal masses were hypoechoic. We believe that CT is the procedure of choice for the detection and follow-up of renal lymphoma.
A set of tiny (T) and huge (H) anchor circles and a set of small (S) and large (L) intermediate circles were used. Trials with TT, HH, TH, and HT pairs were immediately and unexpectedly followed by single trials with SS, LL, SL, or LS pairs. In addition, the anchor and intermediate sets were interchanged. Subjects took longer to decide that unexpected SL and LS pairs were different, and they made no errors to unexpected SS and LL pairs. In contrast, subjects took less time to decide that unexpected SS and LL pairs were the same, and they frequently made errors to unexpected SL and LS pairs. Nonetheless, subjects' responses to the unexpected pairs of anchor circles were not similarly affected. Decision-criterion explanations can probably be discounted. Instead, the findings accord with earlier research suggesting that memory involving anchor stimuli increases the perceived similarity of intermediate and/or relatively similar stimuli. However, the present findings strongly suggest that memory altered the quality of sensory information at a perceptual level. This memorial influence seemingly occurred within about 400 msec. In one study, a set of large and huge circles replaced the small and large set, and similar results were found. This study relates to theories of anchor effects.

Continuous cell lines that secrete both insulin and somatostatin were established by two cooperating groups of investiagtors from a serially transplantable, radiation-induced, rat islet cell tumor. The cell lines, named RIN-r and RIN-m, were initiated from tumors maintained in inbred rats or in athymic nude mice, respectively. The cultured cells are epithelioid, free of fibroblast contamination, and can be cloned. They have a hypodiploid chromosome number, are tumorigenic, and posses amine-handling properties, including high levels of L-dopa decarboxylase and formaldehyde-induced fluorescence. Preliminary analysis of clones revealed a spectrum of insulin secretion from undetectable to relatively high. These clonal cell lines provide important systems to study the biology of insulin and somatostatin.

The relationship between beta-cell replication and insulin release was investigated utilizing neonatal rat pancreatic monolayer cell cultures. Glucose-induced insulin release was either inhibited using diazoxide or mannoheptulose, or potentiated using theophylline. The corresponding effects on the frequency of beta-cell replication were determined by incubating cultures with [3H]thymidine and estimating the frequency of beta-cell labeling in aldehyde thionine-stained radioautographs. beta-Cell replication and insulin release were shown to be dissociable processes in two ways. First, in the presence of diazoxide (1-100 microgram/ml), insulin release was inhibited by as much as 86%, while the frequency of beta-cell replication was not reduced. Second, in the presence of theophylline (1 mM), insulin release was increased by 23%, while beta-cell replication was inhibited. Finally, the inhibition of both beta-cell replication and insulin release by mannoheptulose (5.5 mM) indicated that glucose utilization may be important for both of these beta-cell processes.
Primary liver cysts may cause diagnostic uncertainty when evaluated by conventional means. Ten cases of simple or multiple cysts unassociated with polycystic renal disease were studied. Ultrasonography was demonstrated to be the most accurate technique for visualizing these lesions and establishing their cystic nature.
