Long-term follow-up of patients with Austin Moore Prostheses.
A retrospective study of the long-term follow-up of patients with Austin Moore prostheses is presented. Sufficient data were present to evaluate 78 hips postoperatively at six months, and 1, 5, 10, and 15 years when applicable. The average age of patients at the time of operation was 56.1 years. Most preoperative diagnoses resulted from previous operative procedures which had failed (there were only six fresh fractures). The operative technic is discussed. Postoperatively, cessation of pain is relatively early and the return of function increases linearly but at a slower rate. The importance of partial weight-bearing for four to six months postoperatively as well as daily physical therapy is emphasized. The mean amount of settling of the prostheses (total in the femur and acetabulum) was 1.63 cm in all patients. We believe that certain postoperative principles are applicable to all types of reconstructive surgery of the hip.

Identification of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) chromosomes with genes controlling the level of nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, and acid proteinase using the Chinese Spring-Hope substitution lines.
The levels of nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, and acid proteinase were compared in the primary leaves of 8-day-old wheat seedlings of Chinese Spring, Hope, and the 21 disomic substitution lines of Hope in Chinese Spring. Two chromosomes, 7B and 7D, were considered to contain genes controlling the level of nitrate reductase. Substitution of Hope chromosome 7B caused a highly significant increase in the in vitro stability of nitrate reductase. Nitrite reductase appeared to be controlled by two major genes, located on chromosomes 4D and 7D, and two minor genes, located on chromosomes 3D and 5A. In the case of acid proteinase, substitution of chromosome 1D caused a significant reduction in enzyme activity.
Pauciarticular juvenile arthritis.
Pauciarticular juvenile arthritis begins insidiously, involves no more than five joints, causes few systemic symptoms, and has a relatively mild course. The disease may recur at the same site or in previously uninvolved joints. It generally runs its course in four years. The authors believe that synovectomy is contraindicated in children suspected of having this mild form of arthritis unless joint destruction is evident or symptoms progress for more than three years.
Complications of total hip replacement.
The most common complications of total hip replacement are infection, loosening, dislocation, phlebothrombosis and embolism, neurovascular deficity, periarticular calcification, nonunion of the greater trochanter, malposition of components, fractures, and discrepancy in leg length. The cause, prevention, and treatment of these complications are reviewed.
