A water-borne Bacillus licheniformis infection was associated with depressed haemoglobin content, white cell and platelet count. The epidemic was resolved by changing from tanked to mains water supply.

Arterial blood was sampled from 10 patients, on the day after upper abdominal surgery, breathing air, and during oxygen therapy from 24, 28 and 35% venturi masks. PaO2 during breathing each concentration of oxygen correlated with PaO2 during air breathing. The difference between pulmonary end-capillary and arterial oxygen content was used as an index of the impairment of oxygen transfer in the lung. This difference was reduced by oxygen therapy. The response to oxygen therapy did not correspond to predictions based on an iso-shunt lung model. These findings suggest that hypoxaemia in these patients is predominantly caused by ventilation/perfusion mismatching.
Intraperitoneal infection with Treponema pallidum did not shorten the lives of inbred CBA mice. One hundred and fifty infected mice survived to a mean age of 41-24 months and 60 uninfected mice to a mean age of 41-38 months.

The socioeconomic picture of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, is briefly described and the provision of general medical care is outlined. Control of venereal disease is centred on one clinic. Here two doctors attend to nearly 1000 outpatients daily. It is perhaps not surprising that self-diagnosis and self-medication are common and follow-up attendance is erratic.
Sera from various groups were tested for syphilis by cardiolipin, fluorescent treponemal antibody-absorbed (FTA-ABS), and treponemal haemagglutination (TPHA) tests. The proportion of positive results, 12.7%, obtained from an unselected urban population suggested that the prevalence of the disease had declined since 1953. The probable explanation is the widespread use of penicillin. Late manifestations of syphilis are much rarer in Ethiopia than would be predicted from the high incidence at the infectious stage and, if present, they affect the cardiovascular system. These findings confirm old observations. Llymphocytes from Ethiopians with early syphilis did not proliferate when cultured with Treponema pallidum in vitro, in contrast with cells from patients with cardiovascular syphilis. These findings differed from observations made previously on patients in England with early syphilis.

We studied the reaction between molybdophosphoric acid and lecithin. The resulting complex was isolated and shown to contain molybdophosphate and lecithin in the molar ratio 1/3. It is insoluble in water but soluble in chloroform, and the reaction is specific for molecules containing electrophilic nitrogen, indicating good specificity in biological fluids for nitrogen-containing phospholipids. In solution the complex may be reduced, yielding molybdenum blue. We applied the reaction to the measurement of phospholipid concentrations in amniotic fluid. As compared with procedures involving either digestion or the determination of lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio, the present technique is faster and its analytical precision exceeds that of the lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio determination. Although results by the three methods do not correlate well, the predictive value of the present method appears to be comparable with the other two.

Zonal isoelectric precipitation was shown to be an effective method for the preparation of legumin which was homogeneous as judged by ultracentrifugation and polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. The subunit structure of legumin was investigated by preparative sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis and ion-exchange chromatography in urea. Five distinct subunits, of which two were acidic (alpha) and had a molecular weight of 37000, and three were basic (beta) with molecular weights of 20100, 20900 and 23800, were identified. The alpha and beta subunits were present in equimolar amounts in the legumin molecule and, in view of this and molecular-weight considerations, an alpha(6)beta(6) subunit model was proposed for legumin.
