Hypersensitivity to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs--asthma precipitated by zomepirac. A case report.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents can precipitate an asthma attack of varying severity. The most likely mechanism is the inhibition of the production of prostaglandin E with a concomitant increase in the production of the leukotrienes. A case in which an attack of asthma was precipitated by ingestion of 50 mg zomepirac (Zomax) and the patient responded to inhaled fenoterol is described. We conclude that zomepirac can cause reversible airflow limitation.

[The sick cilia syndrome].

The incidence of bronchiectasis should decrease because of improved immunization, but certain defects would still cause the malady. Fifteen consecutive patients with bronchiectasis were examined for ciliary defects by examining the nasal mucosae with an electron microscope and measuring the clearance of technetium-99m from the lung with a gamma camera. Three patients were found to have defects. Compound cilia, disorganization of the tubular structure, vacuolization and deficient inner dynein arms were observed. In one patient a loss of cell membranes which returned to normal after 4 months, was observed. Ciliary abnormalitites can either be anatomical or physiological and 'sick cilia' should be considered as a cause of bronchiectasis.

A krypton-81m generator for organ ventilation and perfusion investigations.

A sterile pyrogen-free generator for ultra-short half-life 81mKr has been developed. During initial loading, the binding efficiency of 81Rb is 90--99%. The count rate during perfusion is 3 x 10(5) counts per minute for a 1,9 GBq (50 mCi) 81Rb generator. The generator has been used for routine and special investigations of lung perfusion and ventilation and for myocardial perfusion during catheterization.
