Load measurement in orthopaedics using strain gauges.

This paper describes the practical aspects of the design, construction and use of strain gauged transducers in clinical orthopaedics. The role of force measurement as a procedure for diagnosis and evaluation in orthopaedics is reviewed and the type of useful data this technique can yield is indicated. The procedure for setting up a load measuring programme is then covered in detail. This includes the formulation of a clinically viable procedure which yields meaningful data, design and construction of the transducers, choice of gauges, their associated instrumentation and analysis of data. The strain gauge itself is dealt with in sufficient detail to cover all the measurement situations which may be encountered in the orthopaedic clinic. Practical aspects, such as the source of supply of components, are fully described.

A new device producing ambulatory intermittent pneumatic compression suitable for the treatment of lower limb oedema: a preliminary report.

The ideal conservative treatment for lower limb oedema would be one that provided intermittent compression whilst allowing the patient to remain mobile. In this article we describe the development of a pneumatic ambulatory compression device that utilizes the patient's weight applied, during walking, to air cells under the foot to provide compression to the ankle and calf. In volunteer studies this device typically produced a cycle of interface pressure changes from 20 to 45-50 mmHg on the lower calf and 20 to 35-40 mmHg on the upper calf.

A critical review of the literature on foot orthoses.

Many reports have been published on the value of foot orthoses in treating a variety of biomechanical problems. This article reports on the application of rules developed in the 1980s to assess the scientific rigor, and hence the clinical applicability, of these publications.
