Chronic pain management support group: a program designed to facilitate coping.

Chronic low back pain is experienced by many. Pain management programs have been developed to help patients cope with their condition and learn ways to modify their lifestyle to reduce discomfort. This article describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of a chronic pain management program at one facility.

Management of chronic, resistive scabies: a case study.

It took about 9 months of diligent effort to resolve Mr. C's chronic, highly resistive case of scabies. In all, Mr. C. had a total of seven treatments with a scabicidal lotion or cream. In addition, other medications were prescribed in an attempt to resolve his skin condition. The treatment of scabies is costly to an institution, in medications, supplies, and additional nursing time required to treat the patient, as well as other patients prophylactically. Therefore it behooves nurses to do a thorough skin assessment on all nursing home care patients at least monthly, recognize early signs of scabies, and be cognizant of the fact that scabies in the elderly patient may have an atypical distribution.

Survey of animal livers for vitamin A content.

Retail samples of livers from calf (23), ox (18), lamb (17), pig (15), chicken (16) and turkey (1) were analysed to determine levels of vitamin A (all trans-retinol) and to aid assessment of the effects of using vitamin supplemented compound feedingstuffs for livestock. For comparison, 22 liver samples from lambs reared on diets not containing vitamin-supplemented compound feedingstuffs and four samples of liver from ox which had received supplemented feed but not during the last four months prior to slaughter were also analysed. The chosen method of analysis utilized saponification, solvent extraction and normal-phase high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. For all species analysed, the levels of vitamin A ranged from 10 to 1100 mg/kg, with all but seven at or below 400 mg/kg. For lamb and ox livers, the mean levels were 310 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg respectively for retail samples. The mean levels were 220 mg/kg (lamb) and 120 mg/kg (ox) in liver samples from animals fed controlled diets. The results are of the same order as those reported over recent years.

The carry-through of residues of thiabendazole, tecnazene and chlorpropham from potatoes following manufacture into potato crisps and jacket potato crisps.

Potatoes, commercially treated with thiabendazole, tecnazene and chlorpropham, were processed into potato crisps and jacket potato crisps at a crisp factory using standard manufacturing conditions. A multi-residue method based on gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection was developed and used to determine pesticide residue levels in the potatoes and potato crisps. Results showed that the residues of all three pesticides were significantly reduced to less than 2% and less than 10% of the maximum theoretical residue carry-through level for potato crisps and jacket potato crisps respectively.

Gastrointestinal immune responses in HIV infected subjects.

The gut associated lymphoid tissue is responsible for specific responses to intestinal antigens. During HIV infection, mucosal immune deficiency may account for the gastrointestinal infections. In this review we describe the humoral and cellular mucosal immune responses in normal and HIV-infected subjects.

Gaming: a teaching strategy for adult learners.

Developing stimulating and innovative educational episodes poses a challenge to nurse educators. The technique of gaming is making a comeback on the educational scene as it facilitates internalization of concepts and promotes affective learning and the application of psychomotor skills. The theoretical use of gaming strategies, development, implementation, and applicability in staff development is discussed.

Stress management: a program designed to facilitate coping.

Continual exposure to work-related stressors compounds nurses' workloads, increases their stress levels, and places increased demands on their abilities to adapt. Nurses need to learn and routinely use coping measures to prevent exhaustion and burnout. This article describes the assessment, plan, implementation, and evaluation of an in-house stress management continuing education program to aid staff members in halting the cyclic process of stress.

Quality assurance. A staff development concern.

To ensure high standards of nursing care, staff development educators need to develop a quality assurance (QA) plan specifically designed to monitor the outcome of educational activities. This article focuses on the design of a QA plan and its use in assessing nursing education programs for their quality, appropriateness, and clinical application.

Humor: a teaching strategy to promote learning.

Staff development educators strive to identify methods to facilitate learners' receptivity to information presented, willingness to explore new ideas, and ability to analyze relationships among concepts. This article focuses on the value of humor as a teaching strategy and suggests methods for its incorporation into educational offerings. A "Humor Profile" is provided to give nurse educators an indication of the degree to which they need to improve their use of humor as a teaching strategy.
