Adult levels of meridional anisotropy and contrast threshold in 5-year olds.

This study, using a forced-choice technique, shows that 5-yr-old children have greater sensitivity for vertical and horizontal sinusoidal gratings than for obliques. Contrast thresholds for all orientations were similar to those of adults as was the magnitude of the meridional anisotropy. These results suggest that meridional anisotropy does not develop over an extended period of childhood as was previously reported (Mayer, 1977). Reasons for the discrepancy between the two studies are discussed.

Contrast sensitivity in children and adults.

Contrast sensitivity functions to vertical sinusoidal gratings have been measured in 135 subjects ranging from 3 to 29 years of age. The reported contrast sensitivities for all spatial frequencies increased steadily with age, reaching adult levels during adolescence. The usefulness of these functions as a clinical test is discussed.

Sex differences in birth patterns of schizophrenics.

Birth patterns of non-aboriginal, first admission, Western Australian psychiatric patients born between 1920 and 1950 were compared statistically with those of the general population. Three I. C. D. categories were examined: schizophrenia, anxiety neurosis, and depressive neurosis. For both categories of neurosis no deviations from normal birth patterns were observed. For males, marked excesses in schizophrenic births were observed in June, and for females a similar excess occurred in September. Possible explanations for this sex difference are examined.
