Coronary artery bypass operation in septuagenarians.

Increasing numbers of patients more than 70 years old are at risk from coronary artery disease. The continued success of coronary artery bypass operation in selected patients provides impetus for applying this procedure to older patients as well. Our results indicate coronary artery operation is effective in older patients and has a low mortality (3% in our series). In patients in this age group, coronary artery operation can be combined with other procedures, when indicated, such as cardiac valve replacement or repair, left ventricular aneurysmectomy, carotid endarterectomy, and cholecystectomy.

Nursery-based intervention with prematurely born babies and their mothers: are there effects?

The effects of nursery-based intervention with healthy, prematurely born babies and their socially disadvantaged mothers were evaluated. Mother-infant dyads were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups: In group one, the babies received special stimulation designed to make them more active contributors to the interactions with their mothers; in group two, mothers received special training to help them become more responsive to cues from their babies; in group three, infants received stimulation and mothers received training. In addition, a fourth group of preterm babies who received regular hospital care served as a comparison group to assess the short-term effects of the stimulation program. Outcome measures designed to evaluate various aspects of mother-infant interaction and infant development failed to reflect any effects of the interventions, either at the time the babies were discharged from the hospital or one year later. We attribute the lack of positive findings to the fact that the mothers faced numerous crises in their social environments. We conclude, therefore, that nothing short of massive social change is likely to result in measurable effects.

Electron donation to photosystem I.

Electron donation to photosystem I was studied in highly resolved particles from spinach. Divalent cations increased the efficiency of electron donation from spinach plastocyanin to P700(+) through a decrease in the apparent K(m) for plastocyanin. Cytochrome f was not an efficient electron donor for P700(+) in the presence or absence of divalent cations. Cytochrome f photooxidation could be observed in the presence of both plastocyanin and divalent cations. The efficiencies of electron donors from eukaryotic and prokaryotic algae to P700(+) were also examined. Divalent cations enhanced the effectiveness of electron donors from eukaryotic organisms, while inhibiting electron donors from prokaryotic organisms. The prokaryotic electron donors were also much more efficient donors than were the electron donors from eukaryotic organisms. A correlation between the K(m) for the electron donor and its isoelectric point suggests that the net charge on the donor protein is a major determinant of the efficiency for electron donation. The data presented raise interesting questions with respect to the evolution of electron donation to photosystem I and the possibility of an additional electron carrier between plastocyanin and P700(+).

Birth order and intellectual development: the confluence model in the light of cross-cultural evidence.

For Israeli eighth-grade students of Asian-African origin, achievement decreases as a function of birth order in small families and increases as a function of birth order in large families. This finding cannot be accounted for by differences in developmental rate or size of birth intervals. It can be accounted for by considering the effect of external influences, such as schooling, on intellectual development.
