Effects of quantity and quality of dietary protein on certain enzyme activities in rainbow trout.

The effects of variation in quality and quantity of dietary protein on certain tissue enzymes in rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were examined. Trout were given for 9 weeks diets containing proteins of different quality (fish-meal, casein and corn gluten) and with protein energy levels ranging from 26 to 74% of total metabolizable energy. In the first experiment, activities of a number of enzymes were monitored by only hepatic serine pyruvate transaminase (SPT) activity changed in response to the dietary treatments--increasing as protein energy level was raised. In the second experiment, opposing glycolytic an gluconeogenic enzyme activities [pyruvate kinase (PK) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK); phosphofructokinase (PFK) and fructose diphosphatase (FDP)] were measured. Gluconeogenic enzyme activities correlated positively and significantly with dietary protein energy level; glycolytic enzymes correlated negatively and significantly with this parameter for all three proteins. There was no consistent relationship between presumed equilibrium point of opposing enzyme activities and maximum weight gain for the three proteins. It is suggested that hepatic activities of SPT, PFK, PK, FDP and PEPCK will provide useful indices of protein status in trout.

The structure of depression found in the general population.

Principal component analysis was applied to data relating to depressive experiences collected from a general population sample. The structure of depression found in the general population showed strong similarities to that found in the psychiatric population. There were, however, important differences. Four substantial syndromes of depression were identified: 'anxiety depression', 'cognitive depression', 'vegetative depression' and depression characterized by the classic endogenous triad of diurnal variations, early wakening, and weight loss. These syndromes were essentially independent for this sample. Examination of component score distributions suggested that people simultaneously experience differing degrees of each syndrome. It was concluded that depression was most parsimoniously classified in dimensional rather than categorical terms within this sample.

Life stress and symptoms at the climacterium.

Psychological and somatic symptoms presented by women in middle life are frequently attributed to the menopause. Many writers have questioned this assumption and have placed more emphasis on environmental and personality factors. Using a life event model and a multivariate analysis technique, life stress was shown to have a significantly more powerful influence on the elevation of symptoms in a normal population of women at that age than did the menopause. Furthermore, the elevation in symptoms occurred some considerable time before that event. The finding that there was no significant increase in total life stress at that time of life suggests the presence of a vulnerability or moderating factor.

The Deming method for problem solving in group practice.

Health care providers are entering a new age of delivery, write authors David Cooke, C.P.A., M.B.A., and Kathleen Iannacchino, RN. Gone are the days when health care was measured only by scientific and caring standards. Today, patients, payers and industry members are shopping for quality health care at the best price. Cooke and Iannacchino describe how the Keene Clinic, Keene, N.H., used the Deming approach to quality improvement in the area of health care.

Protecting your group's financial assets.

On many occasions, groups overlook an important component of risk management, writes David Cooke, CPA, M.B.A. It's what accountants call internal controls, the processes specifically designed to minimize the risk of funds misappropriation and ensure accurate recordkeeping. Cooke explains how to put these controls into place.
