[Quantitative analysis of the asymmetry of the head. I. Cranial bones, intracranial cavity and brain].

Serial quantitative study of the asymmetry of the head was carried out. In the first paper data concerning the neurocranium, cranial cavity and brain are published. The second one deals with the orbit and the third paper with data concerning the nose and accessory nasal sinuses. Studies of the authors evidence that the head geometrically is not symmetrical. Asymmetries - within limits - (normal biological variants) do not cause any complaints or psychological problems.

Diagnosis of skull fractures by autopsy and radiology.

Fifteen human cadaver heads after fixation in formalin were studied. Half of them were exposed to force applied fronto-occipitally. In the remainder the force was applied roughly vertically from the parietal bone towards a line connecting the two internal acoustic pores. The loads were increased until a fracture had occurred. The analysis was based on both halves of each head. Total number of fractures detected by autopsy and radiology. Formula: (See Text). Those who remember that the conditions of X-rays of live subjects are substantially more complicated than those of a severed cadaver head will certainly be very cautious when examining X-ray material for signs of a fracture of the skull basis under clinical conditions. Our data are based on fifteen skulls. It must nevertheless be assumed that results obtained from a larger number of samples would not differ appreciably.

The role of function in the formation of the skull.

Partial resection of the mandible, resection of the chewing muscles, amputation of extremities and ligature of the common carotid artery were performed in animals different in chewing type (dogs, sheep, rabbits and rats). These studies revealed a close relation between shape and function. It was shown that changes in function have a decisive effect on the development and shaping of the skull bones and musculature.

[Experimental studies on the development of human skull fractures].

Pressure tests were performed on certain well-defined points in the median-sagittal plane of soft part covered skulls of 40 human corpses. It was found that the elastic behaviour of the skull obeys Hooke's law, thus the modulus of elasticity is the Ist differential quotient in the stress-strain diagram. Beside the vectorial nature of the compression force the point of application is also of decisive importance. The globe-ellipsoid theories do not correspond to the structure of human skulls. Autopsy revealed over 50% more confirmed fractures than the X-ray pictures. This contradiction in the diagnosis of fractures on the human skull can be reduced by series of X-ray pictures. The lines of the fractures run to the most part along the Benninghoff--Goerttler pillars of strength. Additional biostatic parameters (maximum load before breaking, coefficient of elasticity, stress, elongation etc.) were also obtained which permit an insight into the specific mechanic structure of the human skull and its load-bearing ability.

[Experimental studies on the compression resistance of the head with special reference to the mechanism of fractures in traffic accidents].

Compressional resistance of the head and its role in the mechanism of fractures in traffic accidents were studied in five formalin-fixed heads. Before and after the experiment X-ray examination was carried out. Because of the variability of fractures coming into being, it was difficult to distinguish definite types. Nevertheless, experimentally produced fractures appeared to be nearly the same, as those seen in clinical practice.
