Rapid development of a cancer-like antigen in normal tissue in vitro.

Freshly excised human embryonic tissue used as antigen to test lymphocytes from a cancer bearing patient gives a "normal tissue" result of about 10% in the macrophage electrophoresis migration (MEM) test. When, however, it is grown in vitro and then used as an antigenic stimulant to cancer lymphocytes, a "cancerlike" result (about 15%) is produced. These new antigenic determinant(s) akin to those associated with cancer basic protein appear rapidly (within 5.5 hours) in vitro. Cultures of "normal" cells are thus antigenically different from the same cells in context in vivo.

Clinical trial of iron therapy of psychomotor function in anaemic women.

A variety of aspects of psychomotor function were assessed in 47 women before and after iron therapy. These women, all of whom had initial haemoglobin levels below 10.5 g./100 ml., had been drawn from a population sample of 2,283 women seen at a haematological screening survey. There was no evidence of any beneficial effect of a rise in haemoglobin level on psychomotor function or on symptoms. Possibly this is because if an effect does occur it is unlikely to be apparent unless the haemoglobin level is very low. If this is true then anaemia is probably a rare cause of symptoms or impairment in psychomotor function in the community.

Clinical trial of the effect of vitamin B12 in elderly subjects with low serum B12 levels.

A clinical trial of the effect of vitamin B(12) therapy was conducted in 39 elderly subjects who had been found, in a community screening survey, to have low levels of serum B(12) without a macrocytic anaemia or neuropathy. The study produced no evidence which suggests that in such subjects B(12) is superior to placebo in effecting an improvement in psychiatric state or general well-being. There was a clear tendency for all the subjects to show an improvement during the trial, but this probably represents the therapeutic effect of involvement in a research exercise of this kind.
