Structure of vancomycin and its complex with acetyl-D-alanyl-D-alanine.

Vancomycin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, inhibits the growth of cell walls by complex formation with peptides terminating in D-alanyl-D-alanine. The structure of vancomycin was determined by X-ray analysis of the degradation product CDP-I. A model of the complex is proposed based on this study and spectroscopic data.

The peripheral retinal 'map'.

The condition of the periphery of the retinal field of the human eye is of considerable significance, it is suggested, to those participating in various sporting activities. Its boundaries shrink and expand depending upon the physiological conditions imposed both upon the eye and upon the organism as a whole. Consequently its message to the brain may be impaired under stress with resulting danger owing to delayed response.

A mass-spectrometric sequence study of the enzyme ribitol dehydrogenase from Klebsiella aerogenes.

The first detailed results of the application of a low-resolution mixture analysis approach to the sequence analysis of an enzyme, ribitol dehydrogenase, are given. Examples of the interpretation of the spectra of peptide mixtures derived from this protein are described. Evidence for new fragmentation patterns observed is reported, together with an explanation of the generation of ambiguous sequences by use of a low-specificity enzyme, thermolysin. The overall sequencing strategy evolved is assessed.
