Immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions and hypnosis: problems in methodology.

Hypnosis has been used to ameliorate skin test reactivity in studies dating back to the 1930s. This study using modern methodology and statistical analyses sets out to test the hypothesis that it was possible to decrease reactions to histamine by hypnotic suggestion. Five subjects, all asthmatic and untrained in hypnosis, were given three hypnotic sessions where they were asked to control their reactions to histamine administered by the Pepys technique to forearm skin. These sessions were to be compared with three non-hypnotic sessions. The flare sizes but not wheal sizes were found to be significantly reduced after the hypnosis sessions, compared to sessions without hypnosis. Skin temperature was correlated with the size of reactions. The day upon which the sessions took place contributed significant amounts of the remaining unexplained variance, giving rise to questions about what could cause these day to day changes.

Leafyeasts as indicators of air quality in Europe.

Leafyeast populations were surveyed in 1987 and 1988 with the help of schoolchildren at 23 centres throughout Europe located at Brussels, Rochfort-Marche, Flobecq-Renaix and Tournai (Belgium); Aberdeen and Halifax (Britain); Lyon, Rouen and Toulouse (France); Hamburg, Koblenz and Stuttgart (Federal Republic of Germany); Banbridge, Belfast, Dublin and Enniskillen (Ireland); Hollenfels and Ettenbruck (Luxembourg); Apeldoorn, Deventer, Harlem, Leiderdorp and Zutphen (Netherlands). From one to one hundred schools were involved at each centre. The results demonstrate the suitability of leafyeasts for assessing air quality in both urban and rural areas of the non-Mediterranean countries of Europe. Low counts are associated with known pollution sources. As leafyeast populations change quite quickly, the effect of weather systems on the impact of pollution clouds from urban/industrial areas can be followed. Leafyeasts thus give information complementary to that from traditional biological monitors like lichens which provide an integrated picture of the pattern of air pollution over the months or years prior to study.

Carcinosarcoma.

A case of carcinosarcoma of the bladder is presented. The most prominent element in an unusually heterogeneous neoplasm was the chondrosarcomatous element. Despite prompt preoperative radiotherapy and surgical extirpation, local recurrence resulted in death. In this case radiotherapy did not help and delayed surgical removal, thus perhaps adversely affecting the outcome.

The sarcoma arising in giloblastoma: clinico-pathological report of two cases.

Two cases of primary brain tumor composed of an admixture of sarcomatous and gliomatous tissues are reported together with their clinical courses and neurosurgical examination. There is no difference in clinical course nor in the result of examination between the usual glioblastoma multiforme and these admixture tumor. The histological examination at the surgical biopsy and autopsy suggested that enoplastic change of the sarcomatous element occurs markedly on hyperplastic blood vessels in the glioblastoma multiforme. The neoplastic change observed on hyperplastic blood vessels is not affected by radiation therapy.
