[Simple surgical treatment of hip dislocation in dogs and cats using a modified toggle].

Surgical treatment of dislocations of the hip by a modified toggle as described by Knowles (1953) usually results in a very rapid and permanent restauration of function to normal. An essential feature of this method is the slight surgical injury. This is achieved by using a relatively small toggle and drills with small diameter. The surgical technique and the results of treatment in 18 cats and 10 dogs are reported.

Differential diagnosis between amoebic liver abscess and acute cholecystitis.

The Research Committee of the World Organization of Gastroenterology has gather information regarding the etiology of acute abdominal pain. Seven diseases cover 96% of the causes of this syndrome in many countries of the world, but some geographical variations have been observed. One example of these variations is amoebic liver abscess, present in 5 to 10% of Mexico City patients. Right upper quadrant pain is often present in amoebic liver abscess and acute cholecystitis. Thus, differential diagnosis of these two entities is difficult. Using discriminant analysis and "stepwise" procedures in 100 cases with cholecystitis and a similar number of patients with amoebic liver abscess, we found six variables (symptoms and signs with a significant chi square to distinguish between these two diseases. The symptoms and signs chosen were hepatomegaly, Murphy's sign, duration of pain greater than or equal to 48 hours, previous history of abdominal pain, dysentery, and facial pallor. These variables proved to be better than laboratory test results. With five of these variables it was possible to obtain an accuracy of 92%. Using six variables, if cases of tie (three variables present and three absent) were excluded, accuracy rose to 96%.

Choanal atresia. Report of seventeen cases.

Seventeen cases of choanal atresia are presented, of which 13 were female and 4 male. In 11 patients the malformation was bilateral, being unilateral in the remaining 6; 8 patients also presented other malformations amongst which esophageal atresia and congenital heart disease were the most common. Treatment is surgical, and the prognosis depends largely on the presence or absence of associated malformations.

Action of (S)-10-hydroxycamptothecin on P388 leukemia and distribution of the drug in mice.

As an inhibitor of the growth of P388 leukemia in mice, (S)-10-hydroxycamptothecin (OPT) was as potent as the parent compound camptothecin (CPT). Incorporation of thymidine into DNA was the parameter most sensitive to OPT in vitro (ED50 approximately 4 micrograms/ml), but incorporation of cytidine into RNA and of acetate into lipids was also reduced significantly in the presence of the drug. The cytofluorometric profile suggested suppression of the S and G2/M phases. The distribution of OPT in mice at 2 and 24 hours after ip injection (10 mg/kg) was essentially similar to that of CPT, with the exception of a somewhat greater concentration of CPT in the liver. In their pharmacology, OPT and CPT appear to be very similar, despite reports that the hydroxy derivative is less toxic.

Cheyletiellosis in long-haired cats.

Among 41 catteries, the majority of which were investigated because of problems of chronic pruritus, 27 proved to be infected by Cheyletiella mites. The skin lesions consisted of small erythematous papules with crusts and some loose hairs. After removal of the loose hairs Cheyletiella mites could be collected with adhesive tape for microscopic examination. Human involvement (papular urticaria) was observed in 20% of the cases. Bathing with Lindane was an effective mode of treatment.

Unraveling child abuse.

This paper attempts to clarify the dynamics of child abuse, and to suggest approaches to primary prevention. Child abuse is redefined, within egalitarian value premises, as inflicted gaps in children's circumstances that prevent actualization of inherent potential. Levels of manifestation and causal dimensions of child abuse are identified, and their multiple interactions are traced. Primary prevention is shown to be essentially a political, rather than a purely technical or professional, issue.

The pathobiology of ozone-induced damage.

Ozone remains one of the three most important air pollutants worldwide, yet little direct documented evidence of its genotoxicity exists. The interest in the pathology of ozone exposure and the molecular events that underlie its course stems from DNA damage caused by oxygen stress including hydroxyl radicals, superoxide, singlet oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide. Although the tissue damage associated with ozone inhalation occurs at both the conducting airway and the alveolus, the cellular and mechanistic processes underlying these events are less well understood. Ozone leads to the oxidative decomposition of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Ozone also depresses DNA replication in V79 Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts in a dose-dependent fashion (concentration, 1-10 ppm), which indicates that ozone or its reaction products may interact directly with DNA and inhibit replication. Ozone also linearizes circular DNA and induces ozone-sensitive mutant and pneumocytes to repair its DNA. DNA adducts have been implicated in aging, cellular transformation, mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, and cell death; DNA adducts are products of free radical damage. These events are all common in ozone exposure. Finally, DNA-binding proteins are potent positive and negative regulators, enhancers, or silencers of gene expression. Part of their action may be related to their ability to initiate the binding sequence of DNA transcription proteins and thus form complexes. Alteration of DNA-binding sites by ozone adducts may effect mRNA transcription due to altered binding by DNA-binding proteins. This altered transcription has been shown to effect growth factors involved in collagen and matrix regulation. The present review will address some of the complexities involved in ozone exposure.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Accuracy of t-PA, u-PA, PAI-1 and PAI-2 estimation in human bile by ELISA kits.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to establish the accuracy of determination of fibrinolytic proteins in human bile using commercial kits. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Gall bladder bile was obtained from patient undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The concentrations of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), urokinase (uPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and inhibitor-2 (PAI-2) in bile were measured by enzyme linked immunoassay. Afterwards we conducted so called 'recovery test'. RESULTS: Recovery percents of t-PA, u-PA, PAI-1, PAI 2 were very high i.e. 91.94, 94.07, 93.95, 91.2. We concluded that human fibrinolytic proteins in bile could be detected very accurately using commercial kits.

[Prognostic value of the exercise test in patients with ischemic heart disease].

The objective of this study is to determine the prognostic value of stress testing in patients with coronary heart disease. We examined 95 cases followed during an average period of 33 months. The age was 52 +/- 9 years. All patients had clinical evidence of myocardial ischemia: 78 had previous myocardial infarction, 11 stable angor pectoris and six unstable angina. After the initial event 33 patients were asymptomatic and 62 with mild angina. During follow-up; 42 patients had no coronary events; 10 died, six developed non-fatal myocardial infarction and 37 had more angina, nine of these patients were treated with bypass coronary artery surgery. The annual mortality was 3.8%, all with previous myocardial infarction. In the stress testing the patients who died were distinguished by limited exercise ability and severe changes of ST-T segment. Patients with greater than or equal to 0.2 mV ST-T segment depth or effort duration less than or equal to 3 minutes had an annual mortality F 7% 13.6% respectively.
