Titan: some new results.

New analyses of Voyager spectra of Titan have led to improvements in the determination of abundances of minor constituents as a function of latitude and altitude. Ground-based microwave observations have extended the Voyager results for HCN, and have demonstrated that CO is mysteriously deficient in the stratosphere. The origin of the CH4, CO, and N2 in Titan's atmosphere is still unresolved. Both primordial and evolutionary sources are compatible with the available evidence.

[Vegetative neuropathy and pressure regulation in diabetics].

UNLABELLED: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of autonomic cardiovascular neuropathy (ACN) on blood pressure control in diabetic patients. METHODS: a nyctohemeral blood pressure (BP) monitoring (Spacelabs 5200) and an assessment of ACN, graded with a scoring system depending on usual test (Valsalva maneuver, heart response to deep breathing, blood pressure response to standing up and sustained handgrip) were performed in 90 normotensive male subjects. Thirty controls, age: 49 +/- 13 years, weight: 72 +/- 12 kg, height: 174 +/- 6 cm and 60 diabetic patients, type 1 or 2, age: 52 +/- 13 years, weight: 75 +/- 12 kg, height: 174 +/- 6 cm were recruited. RESULTS: mean BP levels recorded on 24 hours (control: 117 +/- 13/75 +/- 9 mmHg, diabetic: 119 +/- 12/74 +/- 7 mmHg), BP variability measured with the coefficient of variation (SD/mean) (control: syst = 13 +/- 4, diast = 15 +/- 4; diabetic: syst = 12 +/- 3, diast = 14 +/- 4), differences between mean BP on day-time (9 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.) and mean BP on night-time (10:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.) (control: syst = 16 +/- 10 mmHg, diast = 11 +/- 8 mmHg; diabetic: syst = 13 +/- 10 mmHg, diast = 10 +/- 7 mmHg) are not statistically different. It is the same with heart rate. Two control and 11 diabetic subjects have impaired ACN tests. Among diabetic subjects, impairment of autonomic nervous cardiovascular system is correlated with abnormal BP pattern (loss of nocturnal fall, paradoxical nocturnal rise seen in 15 patients).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Project Cassini: a Saturn orbiter/Titan probe mission proposal.

Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a substantial atmosphere. The organic chemistry of its N2-CH4 atmosphere may resemble that of the earth's primitive atmosphere before life arose. The investigation of the synthesis of pre-biotic molecules in Titan's atmosphere and the atmospheric and surface environments of this planet-sized moon will be the focal point of the Cassini Project proposed to the European Space Agency for an international Saturn Orbiter/Titan Probe mission.

Exobiology and the solar system: the Cassini mission to Titan.

The recent Voyager mission and the simulation experiments in the laboratory suggest that a complex nitrogen-organic chemistry is occuring at the periphery of Titan. Thus, this satellite of Saturn appears as a privileged place in the solar system for the study of extraterrestrial organic chemistry which can be considered as part of Exobiology. Projects of space mission relating to Titan are already under investigation, in particular with the "CASSINI" proposal. The CASSINI project is a combination of a Saturn orbiter and a Titan probe mission. Such a mission would allow the first study "in situ" of a complex extraterrestrial organic chemistry in atmospheric phase.

[Recurrent familial hyperparathyroidism. A propos of 7 adenomas in 3 members of the same family. Review of the literature].

Over a period of 23 years, 3 members of a family of 5 presented with 7 parathyroid adenomas (4 in the first case, 2 in the second case, 1 in the third case). Excision of each adenoma, with systematic pre-operative assessment of the remaining parathyroid tissue, led to complete clinical and laboratory cure of each episode. The delay in the appearance of recurrence was between 3 and 9 years. After reviewing the literature, the authors stress the importance, in any case of hyperparathyroidism, of routinely investigating the serum calcium levels in members of the patient's family, especially if the patient is young and if he has had several episodes or multiglandular involvement in one episode. The authors discuss the literature concerning recurrent familial hyperparathyroidism with endocrine polyadenomatosis and the "hypercalcaemia-hypocalciuria" syndrome.
