Releasing restraints in the nursing home: it can be done.

1. The value of physical restraints for nursing home residents has not been documented, yet they have been used almost universally for at least 50 years. 2. The use of physical restraints for confused patients produces numerous negative outcomes. 3. Nursing homes can create environments that are restraint-free for all residents, and demonstration trials have proven the feasibility of restraint-free care. 4. A restraint-free environment produces a dramatic decrease in agitation and mobility problems.

Utilizing a gerontological nursing clinician as a consultant to teach nursing care of aging people.

People over the age of 65 are an increasingly important part of the health care system. Faculty and students of nursing must develop the expertise to work with them if we are to meet the expanding challenges of providing health care to all. Utilizing a gerontological nurse clinician to role model and teach other faculty is one way of developing this expertise and enlarging the cadre of able faculty.

Utilizing a community data base system with community health nursing students.

The instrument to "go out and study the community" can be awesome and confusing to both students and nurses. The use of the data base management system as described in this paper makes the task a less formidable one. It also systematically classifies data about a community into a usable form so that nursing diagnoses can be identified appropriately. We strongly believe that the concept of community-as-client must become a part of the philosophy of every community health nurse. We see the data base management system as one method of incorporating this philosophy.

The extended experience: operationalizing the ideal.

In general, community health faculty who have utilized Extended Experiences think they provide a unique way of exposing students to working with various professional disciplines, learning about administrative processes and identifying ways in which the community attempts to meet the needs of population groups. It allows students to enlarge their perception of the community health nurses' role beyond the scope of home visiting. We think that experiences such as these would be rewarding attempts by other faculty in assisting students to learn the complex role of today's community health nurse.
