Biological data concerning 249 thyroid patients have been treated by using correspondance factor analysis. This statistical treatment has enabled us to compare 2 types of associated tests (in vitro, in vivo) and to evaluate their respective contribution to the diagnosis of different thyroid diseases. There appeared also certain possibilities for the use of such a method in the future: determination of a biological profile for thyroid disease and for Grave's disease patients in course of treatment.

The physical and chemical properties of agarose have been exploited for encapsulation of islets of Langerhans. Formation of microcapsules by extrusion of a hydrophilic polymer (agarose) into a hydrophobic solution created an interface to which an immunoprotective membrane could be polymerized. The substances and procedure used were devoid of cellular toxicity. Islet function in vitro was found to be normal.
Microencapsulated islets of Langerhans retrieved from peritoneal cavity of rats three weeks after implantation had a reduced hormonal secretion and were no longer responsive to alterations in glucose levels. Activation of complement could not completely account for the observed fibrosis which was thought to be responsible for the loss of responsiveness of the encapsulated cells.
125I Sodium iodide, 125I insulin, 125I albumin, and 111indium IGG were employed to investigate release from, and penetration of different sized molecules into agarose/polyacrylamide microcapsules. The microcapsules were formed by photopolymerization of an acrylamide solution round agarose beads. The indium-chelated antibody gave a particular low background count. The different release times were explained in terms of differences in diffusion coefficient. By retarding in vitro penetration of antibodies, these microcapsules could be of value for the encapsulation of living cells in bioartificial organs.

Using isotopes, Benabib et al. were able, in 1970 and following the work of Descuns et al., to evaluate the function of a ventricular shunt system be measuring the flow passing through it. The experimental study carried out confirmed the applicability of the method described by Benabib et al. to the Cordis-Hakim valve after substitution of the 131I used by those authors by 99mTc O4. Measurement of flow is valid only if true flow lies between 0.085 ml/mn and 1.7 ml/mn. Although with flow rates of less than 0.07 ml/mn the values obtained are overestimates, the distinction between no flow and slight flow remains definite.
OBJECTIVES: Patients treated by (131)I may require blood sampling in the days following its administration. We investigated the safety of such samples in terms of radioactivity and the possible disturbance of the analyses by these "131I-spiked" samples. METHOD: 1) The radioactivity of blood samples from 131I-treated patients was measured (dose rate, surface activity, total activity) ; 2) The risk for the personnel was subsequently evaluated and ; 3) The interference of this 131I-generated radioactivity on the results of routine automated and IRMA assays was investigated. RESULTS: 1) All RA measures but two were found below the European limits ; 2) Irradiation of personnel was negligible ; 3) The faint radioactivity did not disturb any analyses. CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate the safety that results from the negligible radioactivity in these blood samples.
140 patients have been investigated by means of computerized tomography (CT) after contrast injection and radionuclide scan (RN scan). For patients with stroke (56 cases), RN uptake was more frequent (80%) at the 15th day of evolution, enhancement of hypodense images at CT reaches 100% at the 21st day. For the others pathologies (hematoma, tumors), the main difference between both examinations, was the volume of the lesions detected. RN uptake and CT enhancement both show the same blood brain barrier disturbance.
