An unusual case of mepivacaine toxicity with ventricular tachycardia in a newborn infant is presented. The mepivacaine probably reached the infant by direct injection into the scalp. Effective removal of the drug by gastric lavage was demonstrated. Exchange transfusion may also have been instrumental in the infant's survival by reducing the high blood concentration of mepivacaine.

The study examines attitudes of family practice residents toward social work collaboration in their practices. Residents valued social work services highly, and almost three-fourths want a social worker in practice with them. Residents valued the broad range of services offered by social workers, and over half could see no disadvantages to such collaboration.

Judging the quality of health care that a plan delivers so consumers can make informed purchasing decisions is at the heart of the major federal health reform proposals. Health care "report cards" are an important step in this direction. But they cannot, by themselves, inform consumers or improve health system performance.
