Fibreoptic gastroscopy in dolphins.

Diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract, including ulceration, infection, parasitism and the effects of ingested foreign bodies are common in captive dolphins. Using a fibreoptic colonoscope, techniques were devised for examination of the oesophagus and stomach and the removal of foreign bodies.

Uptake of glucose and maltose by Bacillus popillae.

Results of experiments with glucose and its analog, methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside, indicated that when glucose was present at low concentrations, it was transported into Bacillus popilliae NRRL B-2309MC cells as glucose 6-phosphate by a phosphoenolpyruvate:sugar phosphotransferase system. An additional mode(s) of entry may be operative at higher glucose concentrations. Maltose appeared to enter the cells by a nonphosphorylative process and was hydrolyzed intracellularly to glucose. No phosphoryl donor was necessary for this hydrolysis.

Childhood seizures: a 25-year follow up. Social and medical prognosis.

Over 200 children from a group of 628 were followed up after 25 years. The children were identified as having had at least one seizure. Particular attention was given to the long-term prognosis in relation to medical, social, and educational problems. Although nearly two-thirds of the sample suffered minimal ill-effects, the problems of the remainder were considerable. 10-1% had died. Of the survivors 11-2% were confined to institutions, and 6-6% were invalids at home. Just under a quarter had chronic epilepsy. While overall the educational achievement of the sample was good, there was also a considerable number of educational problems. Continuing epilepsy was associated with greatly reduced educational and occupational achievement compared with the group in remission. The study reveals the considerable cost of epilepsy to the community in both human and material terms. It also reveals why epilepsy is regarded as a frightening illness.

A teachers' questionnaire description of epileptic children.

A teachers' questionnaire was completed for 120 children from normal schools, half of whom suffered from epilepsy. The rate of perceived disturbance among the 30 epileptic children who, for a variety of reasons, had been admitted to a neuropsychiatric hospital was as high as that of a matched group of psychiatric inpatients. The other epileptic children were seen to exhibit significantly more signs of disturbance than their normal school controls with whom they had been matched for behavior. The two epileptic groups shared certain behavioral characteristics. These did not fit into typical "neurotic" or "antisocial" patterns and may relate to cerebral dysfunction.

Factors influencing the occurrence of schizophrenia-like psychosis in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

From a series of 255 patients who had undergone temporal lobectomy for the relief of intractable psychomotor epilepsy, all 47 patients with 'alien tissue' (small tumours, hamartomas, focal dysplasia) in the resected temporal lobe were contrasted with a group of 41 patients who showed mesial temporal sclerosis in their resected lobe. Five per cent of the mesial temporal sclerosis group and 23% of the alien tissue group were psychotic. A marked interaction occurred between psychosis and 'left handedness'. In the alien tissue group, females, especially left-handed females, were the most likely to have developed a schizophrenia-like psychosis.

Trialkylsily moieties as potential pharmacokinetic modifying groups for aminoalchohols.

Water soluble derivatives of the aminoalcohols methylephedrine, ephedrine and norephedrine have been synthesized to contain various trialkyl silyl groups attached to the hydroxyl group of the aminoalcohol hydrochloride. Variation of the alkyl substituents on the silyl group produces a wide variety of derivatives possessing differing lipid solubilities and rates of hydrolysis to the parent aminoalcohol.
