This paper describes an innovative service program designed to help adolescent mothers become more effective parents. Mother-infant pairs are recruited in the postpartum unit of Cincinnati (Ohio) General Hospital, and weekly classes are held in a pediatric clinic waiting room until infants are approximately six months of age. Medical consultation and/or treatment and education for parenthood in the areas of health, nutrition, and infant stimulation are the foci of the program. The interest and participation of the mothers, the opinion of professionals, tests of maternal knowledge, and measurements of maternal-infant interaction attest to the value and success of this program.
Studies of neurotransmitter kinetics based on intraventricular injections of radio-labeled metabolites have been limited by several problems, including the inability of most investigators to recover more than 45% of the infected isotope from brain homogenates within several minutes after the injection...
The amino acid precursors, levodopa and L-tryptophan, were given to a group of hospitalized depressed patients in a double-blind placebo controlled study. Relatively large doses were not associated with sufficient clinical improvement to allow the patients to leave the hospital. Previous studies using the precursor-load strategy have produced conflicting findings on the use of these compounds for depressed patients.
The pseudoconformal geometry (CR structure) of a real hypersurface M in C(n+1) is reviewed. We give an alternative formulation of a theorem of Cartan-Tanaka-Chern on the existence of a unique normalized Cartan connection on a principal bundle Y over M. A family of curves defined by this connection, called chains, is shown to be the projection of light rays of a conformal equivalence class of Lorentz metrics on a trivial circle bundle over M. The simply connected homogeneous manifolds locally CR equivalent to the sphere are classified. A theorem on moduli for deformations of the complex structure on the ball in C(n+1) is given.

Image processing has revealed the attachment site of antibody 54G8 on chaperonin 60 (cpn60) from Bordetella pertussis. This antibody, previously shown to affect the ability of chaperonin 10 (cpn10) to inhibit the ATPase activity of cpn60, is attached at the ends of the cpn60 and links the molecules into long chains. When only Fab fragments, which also affect ATPase activity, are used for labeling, these attach to both ends of the cpn60 molecule, but the long chains are not seen. Some perturbation of cpn60 was seen when Fab fragments were bound (Fab:cpn60 = 28:1).
An adult with Crohn's disease on home total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for 8 months presented with peripheral neuropathy and ataxia. The patient was found to be deficient of thiamine. A prompt symptomatic response to intravenous thiamine suggests that the patient had the chronic form of dry beriberi. To our knowledge, this variety of beriberi in a patient on TPN has not previously been reported.
Several reporter gene assays have been described where gene transcription is activated as a consequence of a specific signal transduction event, such as activation of adenylyl cyclase (1.2). Reporter genes typically consist of specific responsive elements placed upstream of a minimal promoter, which together control the expression of a readily detectable reporter protein, such as luciferase. We have developed a dual glow-signal firefly and Renilla luciferase assay, which allows the simultaneous measurement of two reporter genes in the same well of a 96-well plate. In this report we demonstrate the use of this assay for the simultaneous analysis of agonist activity at two G-protein coupled receptors which signal through activation of the G-protein alpha sub-unit, G alpha S. Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells stably transfected with a cAMP responsive firefly luciferase reporter were further transfected with the human Vasopressin V2 receptor. Similarly, CHO cells stably transfected with a cAMP responsive Renilla luciferase reporter were further transfected with the human beta 2-adrenoceptor. The two cell lines were mixed in individual wells of a 96-well plate and a number of compounds were screened to determine their activity at both receptors. Stimulation with vasopressin and beta 2-adrenoceptor agonists resulted in the activation of the firefly and Renilla luciferases respectively. Stimulation with forskolin, which directly stimulates adenylyl cyclase, caused the activation of both reporter genes, and stimulation with a range of further compounds with no activity at either receptor did not generate a reporter response. The dual luciferase assay allows the simultaneous screening of two receptors in a 96-well format resulting in significant time and cost savings.
