Hospital's tax battle stretches definition of exempt property.
A dispute between a Chicago hospital and the Illinois Dept. of Revenue may have extended the limits of what's considered non-taxable property. The hospital began buying abandoned buildings and vacant lots surrounding its campus to improve the blighted area's aesthetics, but disagreement over the property's role in the hospital's charitable mission, and thus its tax status, landed the dispute in court.
