Influence of light-dark cycle alteration on free radical level in rat cns.

The experiment analysed the evolution of several redox parameters caused by light-dark cycle alteration in different rat brain segments: cortex, brain stem, diencephalon. Continuous light (L:L) enhanced SOD, CAT, GPX and GSH levels to different extents in the various central nervous system regions investigated, depending on the entrainment period: 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 7 days. Continuous darkness (D:D -24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 7 days) generally diminished SOD, CAT and GSH values, but increased GPX at 48 h and CAT at 72 h. MDA levels were higher in D:D, too. After 7 days L:L or D:D redox indices tended to reach the normal range again. Redox system spatio-temporal versatility and complementarity suggested the existence of a possible biochemical radical cell clock gear.

New radioimmunoassay for the detection of free IL2 receptor in supernatants of murine helper and cytotoxic T-cell lines.

Using two purified monoclonal antibodies which recognize distinct epitopes of the murine IL2 receptor, we devised a new radioimmunoassay for the detection of free IL2 receptor in lymphocyte culture supernatants. Murine cell lines of both helper and cytotoxic phenotypes produce free IL2 receptor. There appears to be a quantitative relationship between membrane IL2 receptor expression and the presence of free IL2 receptor. The latter molecule may have a biological role, possibly that of a negative signal for lymphocyte growth and/or that of an IL2 transport protein.

Effect of growth and aging on the static mechanical lung properties.

Quasi-static expiratory pressure-volume curves were obtained in 119 healthy subjects 7 to 64 years old. Lung recoil pressures were measured at six fixed percentages of TLC between 100 percent and 50 percent. In children and adolescents lung recoil pressures increased with growth till about the age of fifteen and there were no differences between sexes. In adults less than 40 years old there was also no sex difference in lung recoil pressures, whereas in subjects more than 40 years old, females had lower recoil pressures than males at every level of TLC. Both in males and females, aging is associated with a marked decrease of lung recoil pressures. Smoking had no detectable effect on lung recoil in males. During growth the evolution of static compliance was closely related to height, whereas in adults this relationship was less evident particularly in males. There was no sex differences in specific compliance which tended to increase slightly with aging.

[Physical fitness in diabetic adolescents (author's transl)].

In 33 young diabetics, 10 to 17 years old, physical fitness was evaluated during exercise on a bicycle ergometer. Physical work capacity and maximal oxygen uptake are significantly lower in diabetics than in control subjects. The efficiency (W/VO2) is also significantly decreased in diabetic adolescents. These discrepancies might be explained by a lower physical training and an insufficient degree of metabolic control in diabetic patients.
