Effect of oral administration of tri-o-cresyl phosphate on in vitro phosphorylation of membrane and cytosolic proteins from chicken brain.

The effects of a single oral dose of 750 mg/kg tri-o-cresyl phosphate (TOCP) on the endogenous phosphorylation of specific brain proteins were assessed in male adult chickens following the development of delayed neurotoxicity. Phosphorylation of crude synaptosomal (P2) membrane and synaptosomal cytosolic proteins was assayed in vitro by using [gamma-32P]ATP as phosphate donor. Following resolution of brain proteins by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, specific protein phosphorylation was detected by autoradiography and quantified by microdensitometry. TOCP administration enhanced the phosphorylation of both cytosolic (Mr 65,000 and 55,000) and membrane (20,000) proteins by as much as 146% and 200%, respectively.

Circadian and day-to-day variation of prostatic acid phosphatase.

The circadian and day-to-day variation of serum levels of prostatic acid phosphatase determined by radioimmunoassay was investigated in 10 men with a normal prostate, 8 with benign prostatic hyperplasia and 10 with prostate cancer. Serum samples were obtained on 1 day at 8 a.m., 12:00 noon and 4:30 pm. in 23 patients, and on 3 consecutive days at 8 a.m. in an additional 5 patients. There was a variability in enzyme level throughout the day but without any distinct pattern. Prostate cancer patients with elevated levels of prostatic acid phosphatase did demonstrate a greater variability throughout the day than patients with a normal prostate or with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The day-to-day serum prostatic acid phosphatase in patients with a normal prostate varied little and remained within the normal range.

Effects of domestication on production and perception of mallard maternal alarm calls: developmental lag in behavioral arousal.

The process of domestication involves intense inbreeding. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to assess the effects of such intense genetic selection on the production and perception of the maternal alarm calls of domestic (Peking) and wild mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos). With respect to production, the calls of wild and domestic ducks were comparable in four acoustic features and differed only slightly on two features. With respect to perception, the calls of wild and domestic hens were equally effective in promoting behavioral inhibition in wild and domestic ducklings. Although these data revealed little or no effect of domestication on the structure and function of the maternal alarm call, an unexpected effect was found regarding the domestic ducklings' behavior. Specifically, Pekings showed a greater level of behavioral inhibition than did mallards at 24 hr of age. Further experiments indicated that the differential level of inhibition in the wild and domestic birds reflects a developmental lag in arousal consequent to domestication: 72-hr-old Peking ducklings are behaviorally more aroused than 24-hr-old Peking ducklings and are similar to 24-hr-old mallard ducklings in that respect. This appears to be the first demonstration of behavioral heterochrony, which is believed to be an important mechanism of behavioral evolution.

Swing beds can work--with good planning.

Swing beds in an acute care hospital should be grouped in a distinct unit staffed by specially trained professionals who can adjust to the needs of the limited long-term care patients.

Percutaneous needle biopsy of pulmonary lesions.

Percutaneous needle biopsy of lung lesions has proved useful in the diagnosis of tumors and infectious lesions of the lung. Accurate tissue diagnosis of tumors was obtained in 81 percent of attempts, and an accurate microbiologic diagnosis was obtained in 75 percent of infectious lesions. Eleven percent (23 of 213) of patients biopsied for tumor were spared diagnostic thoracotomy, and only one biopsy gave a false-positive result. There has been no mortality, and the only significant morbidity was a 12 percent incidence of pneumothorax necessitating chest tube insertion. The use of this technique in varied clinical settings has made it a valuable and often primary diagnostic tool for lung lesions.

Providers have failed to work for continuity.

Continuity of patient care between different health care settings has been advocated for nearly 20 years, but little has been done to effect it. The study described here emphasizes the current lack of effort by health care providers in hospitals and nursing homes to find a workable solution.
