Interaction between (plus or minus)-amphetamine and atropine on the rat cardiovascular system.

1. The effects of atropine on the pithed rat blood pressure after (+/-)-amphetamine depend on the pattern of the cardiovascular responses to the latter.2. If the pressor response to amphetamine is followed by oscillations of blood pressure and a reduction in pulse pressure or by a fall in blood pressure terminating in circulatory failure, atropine increases blood pressure, but if it is not followed by these patterns, atropine decreases blood pressure.3. The fall in blood pressure produced by atropine after amphetamine might be due to weak alpha-adrenoceptor blockade.

Mapping the lipid distribution in the membranes of BHK cells (mini-review).

An analysis of lipid distribution in the membranes of BHK cells has been carried out based on published information concerning the lipid composition of cells and subcellular fractions. This work may be useful in the quantitative analysis of cell fractionation studies and for the interpretation of the results of experiments involving the breakdown of specific pools of lipid by lipases.

Repair of BHK cell surface ganglioside GM3 after its degradation by extracellular sialidase.

Treatment of BHK fibroblasts with V. cholerae sialidase for 20 min caused the breakdown of about 70% of total cellular ganglioside GM3 and the production of an approximately equivalent amount of lactosylceramide. On removal of the enzyme, a slow resynthesis of GM3 from lactosylceramide was observed, equivalent to about 5-6%/h of the degraded GM3. Resynthesis of degraded surface ganglioside has not previously been observed, but its magnitude is similar to previous measurements of the rate of protein resialylation after sialidase treatment. This suggests that resialylation of both lipid and protein is limited by vesicular transport of plasma membrane components through the trans-Golgi network [TGN] where sialyltransferase is thought to be localized. In contrast, resynthesis of sphingomyelin which has been degraded at the cell surface by exogenous sphinogomyelinase is about five times faster than resynthesis of GM3 and may involve non-vesicular transport of ceramide.

Bedside charts: how to introduce change.

This article describes the efforts of an orthopaedic nursing team to scrutinize and reform the charts used at bedside. A review of the process revealed a ritualistic system that was ill-defined and centered around nurses' work patterns. A new chart was designed incorporating features of the old, and adding new information that was considered useful. The author reports that staff preferred the new design and argues that nurses can initiate change at ward level.

On the receiving end: experiences of being a relative in critical care. Part 1.

This is the first of a series of three papers, presenting in her own words the experiences of Jane, an intensive care staff nurse, when her husband was admitted to her own intensive care unit. In part one, Jane describes her husband's admission to the accident and emergency department, the intensive care unit and subsequent transfer to a regional neurological unit. Jane gives a powerful and often very moving account of her experiences as a relative on the receiving end of critical care. There are many aspects of her husband's nursing and medical care, with which Jane remains dissatisfied. Some of these issues are discussed through professional commentaries, which are offered in the latter part of the paper.
