Proteolytic denaturation and methods of improving the stability of glucose isomerase preparations.

Evidence is provided in support of proteolytic denaturation of free and immobilized preparations of glucose isomerase from a Bacillus species. A number of methods to improve the stability with respect to proteolysis have been tested and their advantages as well as shortcomings are discussed. These methods include hollow-fiber treatment, gel permeation, thermal treatment, and addition of protease inhibitors. The half-life of the free and the cellulose acetate fiber-entrapped preparations of glucose isomerase can be significantly improved. For example, the hollow-fiber treatment can improve the half-life by an order of magnitude.

[Measurement of post-irradiation population kinetics using single-cell cytophotometry combined with double-labeling autoradiography: model investigations into a diploid Ehrlich ascites tumor after 475 rd X-irradiation (author's transl)].

A technique for in vivo determination of the population kinetics in tumors following irradiation is reported in this paper. Using the model of a diploid Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT-dipl), the migration of cells from different subpopulations was followed up through the generation cycle. The measurability of post-irradiation growth kinetics in different subpopulations is emphasized with regard to its importance for practical application with combination treatments or possibility for the problem of dose-time relations. The individual results obtained after 475 rd are presented in detail.

Fetal movements recorder, use and indications.

A new device for recording fetal movements is presented. This device is composed of 2 sensors, incorporating a highly sensitive piezoelectric material. It is sensitive to rapid straining forces such as fetal movements and relatively insensitive to steady, slow movements such as uterine contractions and maternal respiratory movements. In this study of 20 women, the sensors were placed on 2 different zones of the abdomen, usually above the umbilicus. There was a good correlation between fetal movements recorded by the device and those felt by the patients. Seventy percent of all observed fetal movements recorded by the device were registered simultaneously by the women. The device recorded 90.4 percent and the women recorded 79.7 percent of all such movements.

[Recurrent infantile laryngeal papillomas and antuitary insufficiency (author's transl)].

The report at issue discusses the relationship between laryngeal papillomatosis and the endocrine system. It is referred to the clinical course of a 19-years-old patient suffering infantil laryngeal papillomatosis and antuitary insufficiency since childhood. The cause of hormonal insufficiency was the destruction of the hypophysis by a craniopharyngeoma. As a result of this insufficiency the total metabolic process of the patient was reduced to a "vita-minima"-function for years. Despite this metabolic depression the laryngeal papillomas have grown excessively. The number of recurrent papillomas could not even be reduced by exstirpation of the craniopharyngeom although the secundary insufficiency of the adrenal cortex and the secundary hypothyreosis have been compensated by cortisone and thyroxine. A hormonal influence on the laryngeal papillomas by the adrenocorticotrophic hormone and the thyroid hormone could be excluded. An inhibitory effect on the papillomas by the somatotrophic hormone seems unlikely. Furthermore the effect of the sexual hormones remains doubtful. The regression of laryngeal papillomas frequently observed by the end of puberty supports a hormonal influence by gonadotrophic hormone.

Adult

Serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels throughout normal pregnancy.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels were measured in the sera of 443 pregnant women by the beta-hCG radioimmunoassay in order to determine if the third-trimester secondary peak in hCG levels observed by less specific immunoassays was due to cross-reacting substances. hCG was detected as early as six days after presumed conception and peaked between 56 and 68 days, with a nadir at 18 weeks. No secondary rise in hCG levels was demonstrated, indicating that the nonspecific hCG immunoassays give spuriously high values for hCG during the last trimester of pregnancy.

[Results of the synchronization therapy with vincristine and cyclophosphamide in lymphogranulomatosis, reticulum cell sarcoma and lymphosarcoma. A phase II study (author's transl)].

The effectiveness of synchronization therapy was tested on 88 patients who had already undergone some form of treatment for lymphogranulomatosis (stage III B and IV), generalized reticulum cell sarcoma or lymphosarcoma. This therapeutical concept is based on a partial synchronic increase in tumor cells induced by noncytocidal doses of vincristine, followed by cytostatic or cytocidal treatment with cyclophosphamide during DNA synthesis of the partially synchronized tumor cells. The therapeutic plan is similar to a single-agent therapy. In lymphogranulomatosis, complete remission could be achieved in 14 out of 19 cases (stage III B) and in 9 out of 24 cases (stage IV). The mean remission period during an orally administered cytostatic maintenance therapy was 15 1/2 months. The highest rate of remission was found in the mixed cell type of granulomas (23 out of 24 patients). In the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, complete remission was achieved in 13 out of 30 cases (lymphosarcoma) and in 19 out of 15 cases (reticulum cell sarcoma). The mean remission period for orally administered cytostatic maintenance therapy was 16 months for lymphosarcoma and 11 1/2 months for reticulum cell sarcoma. These therapeutic results are comparable to those achieved by very effective schemes of combination chemotherapy but the toxic side-effects of synchronization therapy are considerably lower.

Clinical applications of a new uroflowmeter.

A transportable, easy to handle and accurate uroflowmeter was designed by using standard laboratory equipment. The satisfactory results of assessment of the diagnosis and effects of treatment for relieving obstruction of the lower urinary tract are described.

Humans

[Xeroradiography of the neck and of the salivary glands (author's transl)].

This paper describes the possibilities of xeroradiography in the neck area. 6 clinical samples demonstrate the usefulness of this method in the diagnosis of different disorders of the neck organs. The advantage of xeroradiography is that in contrast to conventional x-ray technique all tissue densities are represented in a single image. The problems of the different radiation exposure are discussed.
