Experimental measurements of the radiation hazards associated with manned space flights.

Tissue-equivalent ionization chambers of special design have been flown on U.S. satellites to determine dose-rate levels in space. A chamber shielded by 4.7 g/cm2 measured doses from energetic protons in the inner Van Allen belt and bremsstrahlung radiation produced by relativistic electrons from the artificial radiation belt formed in July 1962. In November 1962, the maximum dose-rate in space for this shield was 30 rad/hr. Behind 0.4 g/cm2 shielding, the dose-rate peak was 20000 rad/hr. These doses have been determined to be due to artificial electrons in most regions of space, masking the dose arising from energetic protons.

Genetic variation in the expression of ADH in Drosophila melanogaster.

Several chromosomes derived from natural populations have been identified that affect the expression of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). Second chromosomes, which also carry the structural gene Adh, show a great deal of polymorphism of genetic elements that determine how much enzyme protein accumulates. The level of enzyme was measured in third instar larvae, 6-to-8-day-old males and in larval fat bodies and alimentary canals. In general, activities in the different organs and stages are highly correlated with one another. One line was found, however, in which the ADH level in the fat body is more than twice the level one would expect on the basis of the activity in alimentary canal. We have also found evidence of third-chromosome elements that affect the level of ADH.

Response of lupus nephritis to plasmapheresis without demonstration of circulating immune complexes.

A case of post-partum SLE in a 25-year-old Mexican-American woman is presented. The disease was associated with systemic vasculitis and diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis. Abundant evidence for the deposition of complement activating immune complexes was found in skin and kidney biopsies, but no circulating immune complexes could be measured. Therapeutic modalities including corticosteroids administered both orally and intravenously, azathioprine, antihypertensives, and hemodialysis failed to effectuate lasting benefit. Large volume plasmapheresis led to immediate improvement and a dramatic return of renal function. A mechanism of action for the resulting effect is considered.
