The effect of counterion/ligand interplay on the activity and stereoselectivity of palladium(II)-diimine catalysts for CO/p-methylstyrene copolymerization.

The catalytic activity and stereoselectivity of complexes [Pd(eta(1),eta(2)-C(8)H(12)OMe)(Ar--N==C(R')--C(R')==N--Ar)]X in the copolymerization of CO and p-methylstyrene have been correlated with their interionic structure in solution and in the solid state, as determined by (19)F,(1)H-HOESY NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies, respectively. The highest productivity is obtained with unhindered diimine ligands bearing electron-donating substituents and with the least coordinating counterion. Copolymers with a microstructure ranging from atactic to predominantly isotactic are obtained. The degree of isotacticity increases as the steric hindrance in the apical positions and the coordinating ability of the counterion increase. The counterion is located close to the diimine in both solution and the solid state but it moves toward the palladium as the steric hindrance in the apical positions decreases. When the latter is small the counterion competes with the substrate for apical coordination, and consequently it affects the productivity. In the case of ortho-dimethyl-substituted ligands the counterion is confined in the back, above the N==C(R')--C(R')==N moiety, and does not affect the productivity. However, it contributes to increasing the stereoregularity of the copolymer by making the aryl moieties more rigid. With R'=Me and Ar=o-Me(2)C(6)H(3) an ll of 81 % and 72 % was obtained with X(-)=CF(3)SO(3) (-) or BArF(-), respectively. The isotacticity of the copolymers produced by ortho-monosubstituted catalysts depends greatly on the counterion and ranges from 30 % to 59 % with X(-)=BArF(-) and X(-)=CF(3)SO(3) (-), respectively, with Ar=o-EtC(6)H(4) and R'=Me. Based on the interionic structural results, this effect can be explained by a greater reduction of the copolymerization rate of C(s)-symmetric isomers with respect to their C(2)-symmetric counterparts.

Aggregation tendency and reactivity toward AgX of cationic half-sandwich ruthenium(II) complexes bearing neutral N,O-ligands.

The aggregation tendency of complexes [Ru(eta6-cymene)(N,O)Cl]X [N,O = 2-benzoylpyridine (2-bzpy), 1, and 2-acetylpyridine (2-acpy), 2, X- = BPh4- or PF6-] has been studied by means of PGSE NMR experiments. It was found that complexes with PF6- as counterion are mainly present in CD2Cl2 as ion pairs at low concentration, as a mixture of ion triples and free anions at medium concentration and as ion quadruples at elevated concentration. 19F, 1H-HOESY NMR experiments revealed that in ion triples and ion quadruples two cationic Ru-units pair up. Consistently, in the solid-state structure of 1PF6, determined through X-ray single-crystal investigation, two cationic Ru-units are held together by an intermolecular pi-pi stacking interaction between the pyridyl rings. Complexes having BPh4- as counterion are only present in solution as even aggregates, namely ion pairs at low concentration and ion quadruples at elevated concentration. In such a case a counteranion bridges two cationic Ru-units as observed in the solid-state structure of 1BPh4. The reactivity of complexes 1-2 toward AgX salts has been investigated in different solvents. Bicationic [Ru(eta6-cymene)(N,O)(MeCN)]X2 (N,O = 2-bzpy, 3, and 2-acpy, 4) and [Ru(MeCN)4(N,O)]X2 (N,O = 2-bzpy, 5, and 2-acpy, 6) complexes were obtained by the reaction of 1 and 2 with AgX in the presence of three equivalents of acetonitrile or in acetonitrile, respectively. The reaction of 1 with AgPF6 in acetone afforded complex [Ru(eta6-cymene)(N,O,O)]PF6 (7, where N,O,O = 4-alcoxide-4-phenyl-4-(pyridin-2-yl)butan-2-one) from the C-C coupling of a deprotonated methyl group of the coordinated acetone and the C=O moiety of 2-bzpy ligand.

NOE and PGSE NMR spectroscopic studies of solution structure and aggregation in metallocenium ion-pairs.

The solution structures of the metallocenium homogeneous polymerization catalyst ion-pairs [Cp(2)ZrMe](+)[MeB(C(6)F(5))(3)](-) (1), [(1,2-Me(2)Cp)(2)ZrMe](+)[MeB(C(6)F(5))(3)](-) (2), [(Me(2)SiCp(2))ZrMe](+)[MeB(C(6)F(5))(3)](-) (3), [Me(2)C(Fluorenyl)(Cp)ZrMe](+)[FPBA](-) (FPBA = tris(2,2',2' '-nonafluorobiphenyl)fluoroaluminate) (4), [rac-Et(Indenyl)(2)ZrMe](+)[FPBA](-) (5), [(Me(5)Cp)(2)ThMe](+)[B(C(6)F(5))(4)](-) (6), [(Me(2)SiCp(2))Zr(Me)(THF)](+)[MeB(C(6)F(5))(3)](-) (7), [(Me(2)SiCp(2))Zr(Me)(PPh(3))](+)[MeB(C(6)F(5))(3)](-) (8), [(Me(2)SiCp(2))Zr(Me)(THF)](+)[B(C(6)F(5))(4)](-) (9), [(Me(2)Si(Me(4)Cp)(t-BuN)Zr(Me)(solvent)](+)[B(C(6)F(5))(4)](-) (solvent = benzene, toluene) (10), [(Cp(2)ZrMe)(2)(mu-Me)](+)[MePBB](-) (PBB = tris(2,2',2"-nonafluorobiphenyl)borane) (11), and [(Cp(2)Zr)(2)(mu-CH(2))(mu-Me)](+)[MePBB](-) (12), having the counteranion in the inner (1, 3, 4, 5, and 6) or outer (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12) coordination sphere, have been investigated for the first time in solvents with low relative permittivity such as benzene or toluene by (1)H NOESY and (1)H,(19)F HOESY NMR spectroscopy. It is found that the average interionic solution structures of the inner sphere contact ion-pairs are similar to those in the solid state with the anion B-Me (1, 3) or Al-F (5) vectors oriented toward the free zirconium coordination site. The HOESY spectrum of complex 6 is in agreement with the reported solid-state structure. In contrast, in outer sphere contact ion-pairs 7, 8, 9, and 10, the anion is located far from the Zr-Me(+) moiety and much nearer to the Me(2)Si bridge than in 3. The interionic structure of 8 is concentration-dependent, and for concentrations greater than 2 mM, a loss of structural localization is observed. PGSE NMR measurements as a function of concentration (0.1-5.0 mM) indicate that the tendency to form aggregates of nuclearity higher than simple ion-pairs is dependent on whether the anion is in the inner or outer coordination sphere of the metallocenium cation. Complexes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 show no evidence of aggregation up to 5 mM (well above concentrations typically used in catalysis) or at the limit of saturated solutions (complexes 3 and 6), while concentration-dependent behavior is observed for complexes 7, 8, 10, and 11. These outer sphere ion-pairs begin to exhibit significant evidence for ion-quadruples in solutions having concentrations greater than 0.5 mM with the tendency to aggregate being a function of metal ligation and anion structure. Above 2 mM, compound 8 exists as higher aggregates that are probably responsible for the loss of interionic structural specificity.

Metallocene polymerization catalyst ion-pair aggregation by cryoscopy and pulsed field gradient spin-echo NMR diffusion measurements.

Pulsed field gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR and cryoscopic measurements have been performed on a series of homogeneous metallocene polymerization catalyst ion-pairs to determine if aggregation is a significant phenomenon under typical polymerization conditions. Cryoscopic measurements on [(Me5Cp)2ZrMe]+[MeB(C6F5)3]- (1), [rac-Et(Indenyl)2ZrMe]+[MeB(C6F5)3]- (2), [(1,2-Me2Cp)2ZrCHTMS2]+[MeB(C6F5)3]- (3), [Me2Si(Me4Cp)(t-BuN)TiMe]+[MeB(C6F5)3]- (4), [Me2Si(Me4Cp)(t-BuN)ZrMe]+[MeB(C6F5)3]- (5), and [Me2C(Fluorenyl)(Cp)ZrMe]+[MeB(C6F5)3]- (6) were carried out in benzene in the 10-18 millimolal concentration range. PGSE measurements, using (p-tolyl)4Si as an internal standard, were also performed on catalyst ion-pairs 1, 4, 6, [(Me5Cp)2ThMe]+[B(C6F5)4]- (7), [(Me2SiCp2)ZrMe]+[MeB(C6F5)3]- (8), and [Cp2ZrMe]+[MeB(C6F5)3]- (9) in the 0.8-10.0 millimolar range. All results are consistent with a 1:1 ion-pair structural model and show little evidence for ion-quadruples or higher-order aggregates.

19F, (1)H-HOESY and PGSE NMR studies of neutral trinuclear complexes of Au(I) and Hg(II): evidence for acid-base stacking in solution.

By combining the information from 19F, 1H-HOESY and PGSE NMR methodologies, unprecedented direct evidence has been obtained for the formation of supramolecular assemblies in solution between the trinuclear cyclic AuI basic compounds ([Au(mu-C2,N3-bzim)]3 (bzim = 1-benzylimidazolate), 1, and [Au(mu-C,N-C(OEt)=N-p-C6H4-CH3)]3, 2, on one hand, and the trinuclear cyclic HgII acid complex [Hg(mu-C,C-C6F4)]3, 3, on the other hand. HOESY experiments indicate that a stacking similar to that observed in the solid state occurs. PGSE studies demonstrate the presence of an equilibrium between the free trinuclear entities and adduct A in the case of 2/3 admixtures (see Sketch) while for 1/3 admixtures, adducts A and B are mainly present in solution.
