Omnipresent bar coding is going to get even more visible. The Food and Drug Administration has pledged to approve later this year a plan requiring bar codes on every dose of medication administered in hospitals. The FDA's initiative is garnering praise for both its capacity to improve patient safety and potential to save money.

A few details still missing. President unfurls Medicare reform strategy to crowd of skeptics who fear fallout on provider payments and quality of care.

President Bush pushed his new Medicare reform plan to Congress last week, and Democrats quickly responded with an attack on the strategy, calling it the first move toward completely privatizing Medicare. President Bush was introduced by Yank Coble Jr., photo at left, head of the American Medical Association, at whose national conference Bush offered details of his controversial proposal.
