In 1980, during the last major nursing crisis, the American Academy of Nurses (AAN) identified a group of hospitals that seemed unaffected by the national nursing shortage. They were able to provide adequate nurse staffing when most hospitals were struggling to do so. The AAN coined the term "magnet" for the hospitals' ability to attract and retain nurses.
There was a dog-eared copy of the IOM report To Err is Human in my briefcase back in January 2000, when I showed up for my first day of work at the MHA. Released just weeks earlier, I suspected To Err is Human would change the landscape of health care delivery significantly.
