Peak tailoring concept in gas chromatographic analysis of volatile organic pollutants in the atmosphere.

An automated gas chromatographic system aiming at performing unattended analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was developed in laboratory. To encompass VOCs of a wide range of volatility, two different designs of enrichment and separation methods were adopted and compared with performance in analyzing ozone precursors of C3-C12. In the dual-trap dual-column design, lower boiling species (C3-C6) are enriched and separated by one set of trap and column (porous layer open tubular (PLOT)), whereas the enrichment and separation for the higher boiling species (C6-C12) are performed by the other set (wall-coated open tubular (WCOT)). Undesired peaks also inevitably appear on both chromatograms often causing annoyances. To reduce complexity of both the apparatus and the resulting chromatograms, the heart-cut technique was adopted as a base for developing a system, which only uses one trap and one flame ionization detector for constructing two-dimensional GC with PLOT and DB-1. Methods were developed to allow the auxiliary flow pressure in the heart-cut device to be programmed to create dual effects, which not only can perform regular heart-cut actions but can also temporally hold up species in the precolumn for prescribed time intervals. Because it is characteristic for PLOT chromatograms to have reproducible blank retention time windows, segments of a DB-1 trace are produced by the auxiliary flow program aligning perfectly in time with the gaps of the PLOT trace. Subsequently, the two column flows are merged and channeled into single flame ionization detector to produce a very condensed "tailored" chromatogram which is equivalent to overlaying a PLOT and a DB-1 chromatogram on top of each other, except that no peaks are overlapped. This innovative "peak tailoring" concept based on the heart-cut technique is simple in design, easy to build, and extremely rugged for long-term continuous operation as fewer moving parts are involved, which is beneficial for deploying in remote monitoring stations.

Distribution of volatile organic compounds over a semiconductor Industrial Park in Taiwan.

This study examined volatile organic compounds (VOC) concentration in ambient air collected during the years 2000--2003 at several different locations of Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (HSIP) in Taiwan. A canister automated GC-MS system analyzed the volatile organics in ambient air grasp samples according to T0-15 method. Oxygenated volatiles were the most abundant VOC detected in HSIP followed by aromatics that are commonly used as solvents in the semiconductor industries. The major components measured in the ambient air are 2-propanol (29-135 ppbv), acetone (12-164 ppbv), benzene (0.7-1.7 ppbv), and toluene (13-20 ppbv). At some of the sampling locations, odorous compounds such as carbon disulfide and dimethyl sulfide levels exceed threshold values. The estimated toluene/benzene ratio is very high at most of the sites. However, the total amount of VOC is reduced over the years from 2000 to 2003 due to strict implementation on use and discharge of solvents in industries. There exists no definite seasonal pattern for sporadic occurrence of high levels of some of the volatile organics. Stagnant weather conditions with low wind speeds aid accumulation of toxic species at ground level. The results entail that hi-tech semiconductor industries are still a potential source for harmful organic substances to surrounding microenvironment.

A three-dimensional data visualization technique for reporting movement pattern deviations.

Relative motion plots are the most prevalent method for displaying interjoint coupling. The method, however, is limited when amplitude and timing comparisons of like data are of interest. Another limitation of relative motion plots is that the second parameter (e.g., angle) is included at the expense of a continuous time reference. In this paper, we present a novel method for displaying three-dimensional movement pattern deviations. Parameter-parameter-time data (e.g., knee and hip angle as a function of time) are color-coded based on the magnitude and direction of the deviation. The color-coded deviations are mapped to an individual's three-dimensional parameter-parameter-time trajectory, resulting in a multi-color, three-dimensional curve depicting how an individual's parameter-parameter-time pattern differs relative to a reference pattern. The algorithmic development of the color-coded parameter-parameter-time display is presented and comparative patient and normative data are reported.

Training nu-support vector regression: theory and algorithms.

We discuss the relation between epsilon-support vector regression (epsilon-SVR) and nu-support vector regression (nu-SVR). In particular, we focus on properties that are different from those of C-support vector classification (C-SVC) and nu-support vector classification (nu-SVC). We then discuss some issues that do not occur in the case of classification: the possible range of epsilon and the scaling of target values. A practical decomposition method for nu-SVR is implemented, and computational experiments are conducted. We show some interesting numerical observations specific to regression.
